From Rebuild to Playoff Contender: Washington Mystics Face Atlanta in First-Round Test
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

A year ago, the Washington Mystics were looking toward the future. Now, the future has arrived.

Washington enters the 2026 WNBA playoffs after a dramatic turnaround, finishing the regular season 28-16, a 12-win improvement from last season. The reward is a first-round matchup with the Atlanta Dream, giving one of the league’s youngest teams an immediate chance to measure its progress against a playoff-caliber opponent.

For a roster built around youth, development, and defensive intensity, the postseason is more than another series. It tests whether Washington’s promising regular-season formula can survive when every possession carries greater weight. And there is little reason to expect the Mystics to change who they are now.

Defense Has to Lead the Way

Washington’s clearest path through the series begins on the defensive end. The Mystics allowed 82.7 points per game during the regular season, one of the league’s worst marks. Their ability to make opponents work for quality shots has defined their turnaround. That defense will face a significant challenge against Atlanta.

The Dream averaged 91.3 points per game, powered by offensive weapons including Angel Reese, Rhyne Howard, and Allisha Gray. Jordin Canada adds another ball-handler who can pressure Washington’s defense. The Mystics cannot afford defensive lapses that lead to easy transition opportunities. Their half-court defense must remain disciplined, physical, and connected.

The Rebounding Battle

The other major matchup comes in the paint. Shakira Austin and Kiki Iriafen give Washington a formidable interior combination. Austin averaged 17.0 points and 9.5 rebounds during the regular season, while Iriafen contributed 15.3 points and 9.6 rebounds. But Atlanta has its own dominant rebounder.

Reese averaged 16.4 points and 12.1 rebounds and led the league in rebounding. Limiting her second-chance opportunities will be one of Washington’s important tasks. The Mystics also need their frontcourt players to turn missed shots into extra possessions. In a short playoff series, small possession battles can become enormous.

The Question Mark: Can Washington Score Enough?

If there is a weakness that could complicate the Mystics’ ambitions, it is their offensive consistency. The team averaged 84.0 points per game during the regular season and shot 32.3% from three-point range. The team also averaged 14.7 turnovers per game. Those numbers matter even more against Atlanta, which ranked first in the league in steals.

Washington cannot afford long scoring droughts or careless turnovers. If the Dream turns defensive pressure into transition baskets, the Mystics could find themselves playing from behind against one of the league’s best offensive teams. That places additional pressure on Austin, Iriafen, and Sonia Citron.

Citron emerged as one of Washington’s perimeter pieces, averaging 16.8 points and 4.4 assists. Her ability to create offense while also handling difficult defensive assignments could be crucial throughout the series.

Youth Could Be an Advantage or a Test

Washington can’t escacan’te youth of this roster. The Mystics entered the season with eight rookies and three second-year players, making them the youngest team in WNBA history. That inexperience raises an obvious postseason question: How will the group respond when the pace becomes more physical, and the margin for error disappears?

But youth has also been part of Washington’s. The Mystics have shown they can remain composed in close games, with 18 of their 28 victories decided by five points or fewer in the final five minutes. That experience in tight games could prove valuable.

A Series With Familiarity

Washington also knows that Atlanta is beatable. The Mystics won two of the teams’ three season meetings. Atlanta won the first matchup, a 32-point decision, but Washington won the next two. That history adds another layer to the matchup. Neither team enters the series completely unfamiliar with the other.

Atlanta brings offensive firepower and momentum. Washington brings a defense that has consistently kept games within reach and a young core that has already exceeded expectations compared with last season.

The Outlook

For Washington, the playoff formula is straightforward even if executing it will be anything but easy. Defend without fouling. Keep Reese and Atlanta from second-chance rebounds. Protect the basketball. Make enough perimeter shots to prevent the Dream from collapsing around Austin and Iriafen.

Most importantly, the Mystics have to trust the identity that carried them here. This season has already represented a significant step forward for Washington. The question now is how much further that step can take them. The playoffs will provide the answer—Mystics in three.
