The Washington Mystics have redefined expectations this season. On Tuesday night, they added another milestone to their franchise history.
The Mystics defeated the Connecticut Sun, 79-69, to earn their 27th victory of the season, setting a franchise record for regular-season wins with two games remaining.
The previous record was 26 victories, set by Washington’s 2019 championship team. That group went 26-8 during the regular season before winning the franchise’s first WNBA championship.
Seven years later, a new Mystics team holds the record.
Shakira Austin was instrumental in the victory, finishing with 25 points and 13 rebounds. Her strong presence in the paint helped Washington withstand multiple Connecticut challenges.
Austin also converted 11 of 13 free-throw attempts and recorded her 20th double-double of the season.
For Washington, this milestone highlights the franchise’s significant transformation this season.

A 15-4 run in the third quarter allowed the Mystics to take control, turning a close contest into a double-digit lead. Cotie McMahon’s pointer extended the advantage to 66-53.
McMahon finished with 13 points, while Sonia Citron added 12.
Connecticut kept competing, but Washington’s defense kept the Sun from mounting a sustained offensive run to close the gap.
Diamond Miller led Connecticut with 19 points. Leila Lacan and Raegan Beers each finished with 11.

The 2019 Mystics have long represented the franchise’s mark. That team combined regular-season success with the ultimate achievement, bringing a championship. This year has now surpassed the 2019 squad in a key category.
The 27th victory also highlights Austin’s individual season. With 20 double-doubles, she has been a driving force for Washington. Teammate Kiki Iriafen has recorded 22 double-doubles, giving the Mystics two productive players near the basket.
