The Atlanta Dream continue to thrive as one of the more promising young teams in the WNBA. Last season, they made the postseason for the first time in six seasons and continue to elevate by adding key veterans to their roster over the off-season. In a talented 2024 WNBA Draft, the Dream hit home as they acquired a key prospect named Nyadiew Puoch with the number 12 pick.

I was just like one of the 2+ million people who were sitting at home Monday night watching the WNBA Draft. As many expected, Caitlin Clark was the top overall pick who was selected by the Indiana Fever. Other top names like Angel Reese, Cameron Brink, Rickea Jackson, and others also became top 10 draft picks. To wrap up the first round, it was the Dream’s turn to make a selection and the world wanted to know what direction they would go in.

What many expected the Dream to select was a point guard. There were several playmakers on the table from Dyaisha Fair from Syracuse, Nika Muhl from UConn, and several others. Plus, with the departure of point guards Aari McDonald and Danielle Robinson, you’d figure the Dream would select a backup for Jordin Canada.

Instead, the Dream selected a gifted forward from Australia. Nyadiew Puoch established herself as a valuable player in her two seasons in the WNBL for the Southside Flyers. As a rookie, Puoch won the Sixth Woman of the Year Award while helping the Flyers win the 2024 WNBL Championship.

At a young age, Puoch understands how to impact the game from several aspects. Offensively, she thrives off taking high-percentage shots and isn’t afraid of being a rim runner. Standing at 6’2, Puoch shows that she can be a great ball-handler and post player while also dictating the pace on offense. Puoch also shows that she can space the floor as she can become a spot-up shooter behind the three-point line. During her WNBL career, Puoch had provided 30+ point performances that led her team to big wins. Her versatility has allowed her to be a matchup nightmare and she looks to provide the same impact in the WNBA.

Puoch is also an active defender as well. In the women’s game, defense has been a form of art throughout the years. Players hold themselves accountable on that end and thrive at getting stops. Puoch is an active defender as she can switch on different defenders, alter shots, and interrupt passing lanes. Her defensive versatility can be huge for the Dream as they had their defensive struggles a season ago. Adding players like Puoch, Jordin Canada, and others certainly elevates Atlanta as a defensive team.

At 19 years old, Nyadiew Puoch is coming into the WNBA under different circumstances compared to her Draft mates. Many rookies are coming into the league after 4+ seasons in college. While they used those years to develop and elevate their game, they still lacked professional experience. Puoch already has professional experience entering the WNBA. She already understands the high-level play and what it takes to exceed at the next level.

Will Nyadiew Puoch play a big role with the Atlanta Dream? Will she be one of the young rookies who can make the final roster? All of that is possible. The Dream may still have a lot of youth on their roster but have the experience of playing at the highest level. Puoch could become a great compliment next to her teammates. She can play any role and become a game-changer most nights. It may take her time to blossom with her new team but as the season progresses she could play a huge role in their rotation.

Nyadiew Puoch is beginning a new journey in her basketball career. Not only is she transitioning to the WNBA but also moving to a different country. Puoch understands it will be a challenge to adapt to the WNBA culture. But she looks forward to it. Puoch is a player who has high expectations of herself to have an impactful WNBA career.
