The Washington Spirit are heading back to the NWSL Championship after a sharp 2-0 win over the Portland Thorns at Audi Field. The match showcased top talent. Washington started strong, scoring early through Gift Monday and sealing the win late with a calm finish from Croix Bethune.
Right from kickoff, the Spirit pressed well and controlled the midfield. Their movement off the ball made it difficult for Portland to build attacks and limited their chances. Washington’s forwards used speed and quick decisions to put pressure on Portland.
The Spirit broke through in the 27th minute. Rosemonde Kouassi got past her defender on the right and sent a perfect cross into the box. Gift Monday made a late run and finished with one touch, giving the Spirit a well-earned 1-0 lead. The goal fired up the home crowd and put Washington in control.
Washington stayed calm on defense. Sam Staab and Gabrielle Carle led the back line, closing gaps and breaking up Portland’s attacks. The fullbacks intercepted passes, the midfielders tracked runners, and goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury stayed solid.
Portland pressed forward late in the game, but Washington kept their shape. Their patience paid off in the 83rd minute when Croix Bethune grabbed a loose ball, went around the goalkeeper, and finished to secure the win.
With this win, the Spirit move on to their second straight NWSL Championship, showing growth, balance, and resilience. Washington has hit their stride at just the right time and will take that momentum into the final.
