Bay FC endured a frustrating 2-0 loss against the Washington Spirit on Sunday afternoon in San Jose.
The Spirit’s first goal was off an error for Bay FC, resulting in an own goal. Jordan Silkowitz came out of the box and attempted to kick the ball out of bounds, but it ricocheted off Brooklyn Courtnall, soared into the air, and landed in the box.
Bay almost tied things up on a corner kick from Taylor Huff, whose shot went wide left.
“If I’m honest, I don’t think we controlled the game with some of our in-possession play well enough, which impacted the transitions, and that sort of cost, well, didn’t cost us, but hurt us a little bit today and challenged us,” said Emma Coates. “But the message was to keep perspective. You know, we’re at the start of a journey together.”
In the 85th minute, Jordan Silkowitz blocked Trinity Rodman’s shot attempt, but Gift Monday scored off the rebound and sealed the Spirit’s first win of the season.
Bay FC were backed into their own half for the majority of the match, and the Spirit controlled the game with 62% possession.
One bright spot of the match was Silkowitz’s effort in the box. She closed out the game with a career-high nine saves, tied for the most in Bay FC history.
“The other good bit, though, is Jordan obviously had a great game, made lots of good saves and kept us in it, and that’s going to give us confidence, and that’s going to give us confidence and momentum going forward.”
Although the team is disappointed with the result, this is a matchup they can learn from for the future.
“With a quality team like Washington, even though, when you know how they’re going to play, sometimes it’s just difficult in the moment,” Hannah Bear said. “In the swing of the game, you lose, you lose that possession. So you know, props to them, but we’re going to learn a lot from this challenge. And I know the next time we play them, we’ll clean some things up.”
Bay FC’s next match will be on April 25th in New York against the 2025 champion, Gotham FC. PayPal Park will host a friendly next week between the US Women’s National team and Japan.
