Walmart Superstores Must Force Their Way Into New York City

How much longer does this have to go on? Why is there no Walmart in NYC? A vast majority of the public is ready for a Walmart Superstore to be opened in one of the 5 Boroughs in NYC. Stop playing games and do what’s best for everybody. While everyone in NYC is not on board, it’s time to take another look at the proposal.

Back in 2013, Walmart had plans to open stores in Staten Island, Queens, and Brooklyn. While that will still leave out Bronx and Manhattan, something was better than nothing. But former Mayor, Bill de Blasio, and some residents were not big fans of the giant chain store moving into NYC. The reason is that, unlike most major cities in the US, New York City is still community-based and has smaller run operations.

What drives our communities here are the corner Bodegas and Supermarkets that are everywhere. Now, adding a huge chain like Walmart will definitely cut into the revenue of a Pioneer but is it any different than having a Starbucks, Target, Costco, or BJs in NYC?

Right across the bridge in New Jersey, stands a Walmart but in order for NYC residents to get there, that’s quite a travel. While online shoppers can use that location for household items, getting groceries is something different. But look at the Target’s across the city. Consumers can go there, even on 34th Street and buy groceries. While the selection is not as big as what we may find in our neighborhood stores, the option is still there.

But there are still are few larger concerns. One is space. NYC is built straight up if you let the politicians tell it. So where is there space for a Walmart? That’s a lie. There is commercial space all over NYC. The same space they can find for Target, Costco, Sam’s, or BJs, they can find for a Walmart. Another area of concern has been the cost of real estate. There is no denying that everything in NYC is high. So yes, Walmart will pay a pretty cost to be housed in any of the NYC areas. But what’s the difference with the other retail stores? But isn’t there an Amazon facility in Staten Island? See, it can be done.

Will NYC Ever Get A Walmart Superstore

Another factor is that according to the naysayers, the NYC scene is more modern, meaning residents love the feel of neighborhood stores and online shopping compared to the big retail chain. How is that true when Sam’s and the rest of the big companies are still in business and growing?

Let’s be honest here. The main issue is that many believe that Walmart Superstores are for the poor. Let’s call it what it is. That’s why you won’t see a Walmart in Chelsea or any place like that. Who cares. Put it in the neighborhoods where it will flourish. There is more to this city than Manhattan. It’s a major headache to go to Google and type in “Walmart near me” and get directions for the Walmart in Jersey. We deserve better.

Just because the cost of living is high in New York City does not mean that the cost of eating should be high as well. It will open up 1000s of jobs but that’s another issue with the state officials and residents. The minimum wage in NYC is $15. Is Walmart willing to pay that? Some folks believe no as Walmart has caught a bad rep in years past in how they treat their workers.

Will it be easy? No. But to keep depriving NYC of one of the largest retail stores is crazy. Walmart has its issues just like every other big chain but some New Yorkers have never been inside one before, they have no idea what they’re missing out on and that’s a big reason why the city refuses to add one. But ask those same lawmakers this. When traveling, have they ever stepped foot in a Walmart to shop, and if so, what was their reason for doing so?
