U.S. Open: First round washed out

Rain or shine, the U.S. Open waits for no man. Awesome squirrel logo be damned.

It looks like golf’s toughest challenge got a bit easier Thursday after over an inch of rain drenched the course overnight. What was supposed to be a tournament that would have no golfer finishing below par has many after the first day, including leader Andrew Landry with a 3-under score.

Choppy weather didn’t let up for the golfers, either. Play was suspended after just an hour or two, and it wouldn’t be long after play resumed that it was suspended a second time because of more rain.

Not the best start to a U.S. Open ever. I guess they should’ve taken it back to Pebble Beach. No need to worry about rain in California right now.

Regardless, most players and officials hope for a dryer weekend to come. Hopefully Oakmont will dry up a bit, forcing these scores to shoot up and give us some of the U.S. Open golf that we’re used to seeing.

Landry currently leads and did for most of the day, before and after the water started coming down.

Bubba Watson, two-time Masters champion, is in second. He’s only one shot behind at 2-under

Jordan Spieth is hanging around, too, but he’s a bit further back. The defending champ is four shots behind at 1-over and tied for 16th.

Other notable names near the top include Zach Johnson, Kevin Streelman, and (gasp) amateur Scottie Scheffler? An amateur is among the best at the U.S. Open?

Look for that to change by Saturday.

Keep in mind, the first round isn’t quite finished yet. Many golfers will be finish their opening rounds in the morning and try to fit in another 18 holes before Saturday’s cut.
