Detroit delivered a breakthrough. Michael Thorbjornsen closed with a 63, including a back-nine 30, to run down the field at Detroit Golf Club and capture his first career PGA Tour title, finishing at 18-under to edge Xander Schauffele by two. Davis Riley held the 54-hole lead but couldn’t find another gear on Sunday, settling for solo third, while Rasmus Højgaard rounded out the top four. The field was packed with names we know, and I would say overall we as fans got the goods and then some.
It’s also the end of an era at this venue. Rocket Companies has opted not to renew its sponsorship, leaving its return to the rotation in doubt. This marks the final Rocket Classic in its current form. And what a way to close it out: a first-time winner stealing the spotlight from a stacked leaderboard that included Riley, Schauffele, Fowler, Cantlay, and Cameron Young. You always remember your first, and Thorbjornsen won’t soon forget this one.
One More Chance: The Wyndham Championship
With Detroit in the rearview, there’s one more chance to punch a playoff ticket. The Tour heads to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC, for the Wyndham Championship (Aug 6–9), the final event of the FedEx Cup regular season. This is the last stop before the top 70 in points lock in their spots for the FedEx St. Jude Championship, so expect drama on the bubble. Cameron Young returns as defending champion.
Watch for the players hovering right around that 70th line; every shot this week could be the difference between a FedEx playoff berth and an offseason. This is a different sort of pressure for some guys on the tee.
The Standings, and the Road Ahead
Heading into Wyndham, the top of the board is holding steady: Scottie Scheffler still sits at No. 1, trailed by Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young rounding out the top three, with Wyndham Clark and Chris Gotterup completing the top five.
Here’s how the road ahead shakes out:
- Top 70 after Wyndham → FedEx St. Jude Championship (Aug 10–16, TPC Southwind, Memphis)
- Top 50 after St. Jude → BMW Championship (Aug 17–23, Bellerive CC, St. Louis)
- Top 30 after BMW → TOUR Championship (East Lake, Atlanta) for the FedEx Cup finale
The bubble battle at Rocket Classic was intense; names like Keegan Bradley and Mac Meissner are jockeying for position, so Wyndham week is a must-watch for anyone fighting to keep their season alive.
