Fans of the New York Knicks were torn regarding the NBA trade deadline that landed them Josh Hart from the Portland Trail Blazers. Like most NBA fans, all they see are the names on the backs of the jerseys instead of the intangibles players bring that can help a team. Hart is the exact player the Knicks needed and he came at the right time.
Hart, for his career, has averaged 9.8 points and 6.8 rebounds while starting 169 games and playing 28.3 minutes per game. But what he will bring to the Knicks is much bigger than anything Cam Reddish contributed and what that 1st round pick will add. The Knicks were in dire need of a perimeter scorer and defender.
This season for the Trail Blazers, Hart was both. In 51 games (all starts) Hart averaged 9.5 points, 3.9 assists, and 8.2 rebounds while shooting .504 percent from the floor. This is exactly what the New York Knicks craved. They needed another player who will get after it on the rebounding and defensive side of the floor. Then you add that he’s teaming up with his college teammate, Jalen Brunson, and this could would out well for the Knicks.
Even with Tom Thibodeau going with a rotation of perimeter players in Brunson, RJ Barrett, Immanuel Quickley, and Quentin Grimes, there is space for Hart to wiggle his way in there. Thibbs will need to put Quickley and Grimes back to the 2nd unit and let Hart, Brunson, and Barrett man the perimeter.
New York Knicks Landed A Great Player In Josh Hart
In his 2 games since joining the New York Knicks, Hart is averaging 19.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 65 percent from the floor in 27 minutes per game. He’s doing this coming off the bench. Thibbs must move him to the starting unit and he must do it now.
Adding Josh Hart to a unit that has Randle, Brunson, and Barrett will give the Knicks a better unit defensively and offensively. Grimes (10.2) and Quickley (12.6) can still lead the second unit which will give the Knicks one of the best in the NBA. And once Mitchell Robinson returns to the floor, the Knicks will be that much better in terms of defense.
As of writing, the New York Knicks are ranked 3rd in Rebounds and 12th in Points Allowed per game, with Robinson in and out of the lineup. While most teams were going for the big names, the Knicks finally did something smart and went with the pieces that best fit what they were trying to accomplish. They have 2 All-Star players in Brunson and Julius Randle, what they were missing were perimeter defense and a 4th scorer. Hart checks all those boxes.
Of course, it would have been even better if they could have moved Derrick Rose and Evan Fournier for another PF but they can still make a move with one of the buyout players that will be on the market. While fans of the New York Knicks were wishing for Zack LaVine or some huge draw, the Knicks got who they needed. Josh Hart is a solid player and he adds a dimension the Knicks were lacking. However, he’s still not a second-unit player. He deserves to be rocking with the rest of the starters.
