We all know Arch Manning will be, and should be, the Texas Longhorn starter, but backup quarterback KJ Lacey is off to a strong start in fall camp. Manning is also off to a good start in camp, showing off his arm strength. Lacey has shown up big in camp during passing drills. According to Yahoo, Lacey did not misfire a single ball during the 25-minute media practice window. Lacey might not have the strongest arm, but he has been the most accurate quarterback at camp.
Spring Practice
Lacey started improving during the spring when he saw first-team reps in practice because Manning was out with foot surgery. Lacy used a quick release and timing to take command of the Longhorn offense in spring practice. According to Longhorns on SI, Lacey was arguably one of the most impressive quarterbacks of the spring, particularly on deep throws. His touch and accuracy downfield stood out, while his short-to-intermediate passing looked sharper than expected.

Mobile QB
Lacey’s improved passing adds to his strong mobility. One of his biggest strengths is his ability to create plays with his left. Rather than simply standing in the pocket and taking a sack, Lacey has shown the athleticism to escape pressure, extend plays, and make throws on the move. Sarkisian specifically pointed to that mobility and play-extension ability during the spring.
Outlook
There is also a bigger reason Texas fans should keep an eye on Lacey. Manning is the starter in 2026, but college football has become incredibly difficult to predict beyond one season. If Manning has the type of season many expect, the NFL could become part of the conversation. That means Texas has to continue developing the quarterbacks behind him.
Lacey has a head start because he’s already familiar with the program and Sarkisian’s system. If he continues improving throughout the 2026 season, he could put himself in position for a much bigger role down the road. That’s what makes this season important for him even if he doesn’t see significant playing time. Every practice is an audition for the future.
