The NFL owner’s meetings are this week and it’s already a relaxed vibe with Jerod Mayo as head coach of the Patriots. Whether the Bailey Zappe people like it or not the Patriots will start Jacoby Brissett and draft their next franchise quarterback with the third overall pick next month. Here is what Jerod Mayo said on Sunday to NFL Network.
The keywords are Jacoby is a great leader. He’s not like the arrogant backup quarterback who carries himself like the next best thing since Tom Brady. Jacoby Brissett knows that when his time is up he will be happy to step aside and let Drake Maye take over to try and be the next franchise quarterback. Brissett was with the Patriots before and knows how Alex Van Pelt runs the offense having played for him with the Browns. Face it Patriot fans expect to win 7 or 8 games and zero Zappe.
Jacoby Brissett Is Quarterback Number One
I see the Patriots drafting two quarterbacks in this draft. Drake Maye in my opinion at three then another one in the later rounds. Eliot Wolf and Jerod Mayo want to prove a point to Belichick on how to properly develop the next franchise quarterback. Which isn’t to start him right away then change the coordinators to a defensive and special teams coach. It’s to let him sit by an experienced veteran like Brissett who doesn’t have an ego problem and can teach Maye how to play in Van Pelt’s system.
Mayo said this about taking a quarterback with the third overall pick.
I think they really love Drake Maye in my opinion and are planning on taking him at three. Caleb Williams is going to the Bears while Daniels goes to the Commanders. For the Patriots it’s either Maye or McCarthy and I think they’re going with Maye.
Having a quarterback like Brissett is a great bridge quarterback for the next guy. Every time I see a Tweet or a comment about the Patriots should start Zappe in 2024 I hope they draft Maye start Brissett and cut Zappe just to prove the Zappe people wrong. Not everyone is going to be Brady people get it through your heads. This is a rebuild and they don’t need arrogant players on this team that think they can do no wrong because the former head coach liked him. They need players that will lift up the rookie quarterback and make him feel welcome.
Brissett does all of those things and Zappe doesn’t period.
