The 2026 WNBA season officially tipped off on May 8, marking the league’s 30th anniversary season. This year also brings a major expansion with the addition of two new franchises: Portland Fire and Toronto Tempo, with Toronto becoming the first Canadian team in WNBA history.

The new season also introduced a fresh rookie class, familiar faces coming back to the court, and several surprises following the official roster announcements across the league.

Opening games

Connecticut Sun vs New York Liberty

Connecticut Sun traveled to Barclays Center to face New York Liberty, where the home team celebrated its legacy with a special court design and retro uniforms.

Liberty controlled the game from the opening tip, showcasing a strong team performance and quickly reflecting the impact of its coaching change. The game ended in a dominant 106-75 victory for New York.

The New York Liberty will travel to Washington to face the Washington Mystics on May 10 at Capital One Arena, while the Connecticut Sun will take on the Seattle Storm.

Toronto Tempo vs Washington Mystics

In the second game of the night, Toronto Tempo hosted Washington Mystics in the franchise’s first-ever regular-season game.

The matchup remained close throughout the game, but the Mystics secured a narrow 68-65 victory on the road.

Toronto Tempo will host Seattle Storm on May 13, while Washington Mystics will face New York Liberty on May 10.

Golden State Valkyries vs Seattle Storm

To close out opening night, the Golden State Valkyries visited the Seattle Storm at Climate Pledge Arena.

The game started as a tight contest, but the visitors gradually pulled away to secure a 91-80 win. It is worth noting that the San Francisco franchise is entering only its second season in the league.

Seattle Storm will visit Toronto Tempo on May 13, while Golden State Valkyries will host Phoenix Mercury on May 10.

The 2026 WNBA season is only one night old, but it has already delivered drama, history, and dominant performances. With Portland Fire still yet to play their inaugural game, two expansion franchises finding their footing. Along with contenders making early statements, the league’s 30th anniversary season is shaping up to be one for the books. Stay with Alma Vera on Team NBS Media all season long — this is just the beginning.
