Will AUSL All-Star Cup Continue Rout of Softball Skeptics?

We all know one of them. They may not wear tin hats or crusador membership buttons, but there always seems to be that person in the friend group who talks smack about women athletes. “Not a sport!” “A lot of people look like empty seats!” Forgive this writer for only hearing Charlie Brown’s teacher when skeptics recycle such barbs. Thankfully, fresh off a scintillating 2026 campaign, the AUSL (Athletes Unlimited Softball League) relaunches its All-Star Cup later this month. Three captains will select from a pool of 45 players to fill three teams, with each side’s rosters reshuffling after each weekend.

The AUSL details the Cup in beautiful detail here; therefore, Team NBS Media will not belabor those points. Instead, journey with this site during a full at-bat scoffers will face while futilely trying to knock softball out of the game of life.

Strike One: Dog Days Darned

“More important than what,” cyber-hero Morpheus tells Neo in The Matrix, “is when.” The AUSL times the challenge cup perfectly. In its second annual full regular season, six teams, each with its own city, battled for the summer crown. Like all good events, the regular season proceeded much too quickly! Most notably, in an epic play-in game, the Chicago Bandits triumphed in the longest game in AUSL history. Despite five fielding errors, Chicago downed Portland 6-5 on an 11th-inning walk-off single.

Meanwhile, baseball enters the dreaded August dog days. With so many wild cards, who truthfully needs to stay up for the latest Dodgers bludgeoning? By contrast, the Cup aces the sports calendar. Mean old American Football has not kicked off, and the NBA is well past its peak offseason news. Are Sundays, as ESPN once advertised, for bowling instead? Heaven help us! Excellent softball action to the rescue. Which brings up the second pitch:

Strike Two: Professional Passion

Make no mistake: the 45 all-stars are professionals, and they play to win! Does the innovative mix of individual versus collective incentives create misaligned intentions on the diamond? By no means. This writer observed only the most excellent quality of play from the 2025 stars.

Secondly, a note on the ballplayers’ mentality. Baseball, sure, brings out strong effort from every player. It is also true that with 162+ games, the temptation to hotdog a groundout sometimes overwhelms a batter. In pro softball, since the limelight is not quite as bright (yet), only the crème de la crème have the passion to compete at the highest intensity.

Lastly: is competition, the prime motivator in sports, such an admirable force? Does it not cruelly pit women against each other at the park, when cooperation could work better? Yes and no. To credit a Sports Illustrated anecdote on the Little League World Series: those cameras sure move away quickly from the losing team! Thankfully, professional athletes can see past the awful clichés that do not help anyone. “Size of the dog in the fight?” “Win one for the Gipper?” Yawn. In pro softball, and the Cup more specifically, a player cannot burn a bridge with someone who could be a teammate next week. Granted, the cultural forces of competition are not working too well overseas in 2026, to put the issue mildly. Perhaps generals and militas could watch the Cup instead of fighting. That’s a cause everyone can agree with!

Strike Three: Venue

A borderline pitch! Rosemont can be difficult for away fans to travel to, and the sun sets over numerous convention buildings rather than a mountain range. One is much more likely to see traffic proceed past the outfield than to catch a coveted foul ball.

The gameday ambiance, however, brings a smile to even the hardest faces. In 2025, gameday host Genna Rose performed her vital role admirably. Parkway Bank Sports Complex proves just the right mixture of hubbub for younger fans and intimate enthusiasm for those present more for the game.

As the AUSL grows, grouches will inevitably return to the plate when a laughably overblown controversy arises off the mound. When this occurs, remember that sports must be played with friction. It takes a smidge of Rosemont dirt for the ball to bounce, a bit of shoulder-jousting to retire the side, and now and then a game is just too long. American culture’s full verdict, however, is unequivocal: no dropped third strike. Those haters are outta here!

Jeffrey Newholm

Hey there! I’m Jeff Newholm and depending on your point of view I’m blessed or cursed that my two favorite sports are outside the limelight. Being a UW-Whitewater grad (winter 2013) my first love was d3 college football, but over the last few years I have picked up a huge interest in woman’s basketball (Uconn being my favorite team as their 90 game winning streak helped show me how good a team can get in the woman’s game). I like all the sports everyone else likes (NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA basketball and football) but those two sports are where I really have a passion.
