Why the Connecticut Sun Sale Saga sets the tone for Future WNBA teams

It has been an enjoyable WNBA season; however, despite the injuries and game scheduling, the season is moving along. For one team, it is summer that they want to get through.

As one of the oldest franchises, the Connecticut Sun has a rich history dating back to their time as the Orlando Miracle. While they are looking to win the first title, their time in Connecticut is at a crossroads.

Since July 2nd, 2025, the Mohegan Indian Tribe, which is the principal owner, has been looking to sell the team. The team received a $325 million offer from former Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca that was presented to Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, along with WNBA Executives.

Now here is where things get interesting. The original proposal was that the team move to Hartford, Connecticut, which is forty-eight to fifty-two minutes from their current location in Uncasville. The Milwaukee Bucks owner, Marc Lasry, was also involved in the potential sale.

Breakdown:

Larsy wants to keep the team in Connecticut but move to Hartford.

Pagliucia wants to move the team to Boston and promises to have a practice facility by 2027.

However, after the Commissioner Cup, the WNBA board of governors stated, “relocation decisions are made by the WNBA Board of Governors and not by individual teams.” While we are expecting three times in the next two years, it is interesting to note that a bid was not placed in the last three years.

The deadline for any group to place a bid for any city was January 31st.

The WNBA offered the Mohegan Tribe 250 million dollars, which, to many, is a slap in the face. The league would then sell the team to Houston Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta. The City of Houston is on the list for potential cities to expand and bring back one of the former dynasties, the Houston Comets.

The league is controlling which market is the best fit, and Boston has to wait its turn. It is also important to note that the Mohegan tribe and the Cleveland Cavaliers owner, Dan Gilbert, did not agree to a potential sale due to price.

At this point, it has become a mess with how the Sun, and more importantly, the Mohegan tribe have essentially had two choices: Maintain ownership, or see how negotiations go forward.

However, because of this, the league potentially opened a can of worms while they are currently dealing with the WNBPA, as they have not progressed with a new CBA Deal.

Buckle Up, Ladies and Gentlemen!
