What The Patriots Should Do in Free Agency

NFL free agency begins next Wednesday, March 15th. For the Patriots it’s a big offseason for them coming up. Will they have the splash they had after the 2020 season? That year they signed Hunter Henry, Jonnu Smith, Kendrick Bourne, and Nelson Agholor. Really, only Bourne, and Henry have made an impact these last two years. Jonnu Smith and Agholor have not been great these last two seasons with Smith making zero impact on this offense. What will the Patriots do starting next week? To start they should really sign Mac Jones’ friend and teammate Jakobi Meyers.

Patriots Signing Jakobi Meyers Is The Top Priority

I think signing Jakobi Meyers is key to keeping Mac Jones to buy in. He’s already starting to buy in with Robert Kraft making sure Bill Belichick brought in Bill O’Brien to get Mac back on track to success. Jakobi has always had Mac’s back even when the fans were chanting for Bailey Zappe during last season Jakobi stood up and said how Mac took it from the fans and how much he’s a leader in the locker room.  The number one priority is for the Patriots to resign Jakobi Meyers period.

Patriots Should Trade For Jerry Jeudy

Second, getting another receiver I think the Patriots should trade Agholor and a draft pick to the Broncos for Jerry Jeudy. Jeudy, who played in the Alabama offense, and Mac Jones’ roommate. He would be a perfect fit in the O’Brien offense who was the offensive coordinator for Alabama last year. Jeudy could potentially be Mac’s Jamarr Chase or Jalen Hurt’s A.J. Brown. Getting Mac a legit deep threat and someone that will make plays after the catch is needed. Nothing better than getting to play with your college teammate who you already have a connection with.

Third, release Isaiah Wynn and sign an offensive tackle. Chiefs have decided not to use the franchise tag on offensive lineman Orlando Brown. He’s been blocking Patrick Mahomes for a long time and knows what it takes to make sure the quarterback can get rid of the ball. Yes, Mahomes is a special kind of talent, but he also has a ton of time to throw the ball. I think with David Andrews, Connor McDermott, and Orlando Brown, then go into the draft plus you have Cole Strange on his second year. If the Patriots will release Trent Brown too he was a bit of a headache with his cryptic social media posts last season.

Patriots Aren’t Trading Mac Jones

What isn’t happening next week is Mac Jones getting traded. He’s the quarterback for the 2023 season and Bailey Zappe will be the backup. Hunter Henry isn’t getting traded either if anything they may want to extend him. He and Mac are best friends Heny has been productive his first two seasons in New England.

I don’t think the Patriots will land DeAndre Hopkins. This Randy Moss type of player that always wants the ball pretty much quit on the Cardinals when they were playing the Patriots. He and O’Brien didn’t get along in Houston and I don’t think things will mesh well in New England. I do think Hopkins will go somewhere else other than Arizona, but it won’t be with the Patriots. I think the Patriots are better at trading for Jerry Jeudy like I said earlier. Younger, cheaper, and will give you more and not give up on plays like Hopkins does.

Next week the football year begins, and names will start to fall. As for the Patriots it’s an important offseason to get the buy-in factor back not only with the fans but the entire team and offense. Making a splash would be a start.
