NFLBy now, if you are a regular to the Mile High Review, you already know that I am disgusted. Flat out disgusted by the week seven performance of the Broncos. Thursday night, the Denver Broncos embarrassed the entire state of Colorado. After two weeks of progress, week seven was an absolute dud for the Broncos. Per usual, we will discuss the five takeaways from the game. I am letting you know in advance that this will not be pretty.
Joe Flacco is Awful
Right now, the biggest issue with the Broncos is the quarterback. Joe Flacco is an absolute disgrace. I don’t even know where to begin with this guy. I get it. Flacco is not a mobile quarterback, but that is not an excuse to be a statue in the pocket. Thursday night, there were numerous times Flacco could have navigated the pocket to avoid a sack. He did not. In week seven, Flacco was sacked nine times. At least four of those were on the quarterback.
It’s almost like Joe Flacco has ZERO pocket awareness. A few times, Flacco stared down the rush and didn’t even attempt to escape the rush. Maybe he has some sick pleasure in getting his brains beat in. If that’s true, good for him, but he can do that somewhere else. It’s a fact that the Broncos offensive line sucks. Nothing they can do about that at the moment. Flacco, though, is not doing them any favors by posing for cute pictures in the pocket.
Holding, Offense Number 72
I think I can speak for a lot of fans here in Denver when I say there was a lot of excitement around the Garrett Bolles after his draft pick. Also, I can safely speak for the city and say Bolles can go after week seven. I could not even finish a tweet before I heard number 72 and holding. Disgusted! Just disgusted! There is no excuse for someone as talented and big as he is to get pushed back so often. I don’t know if it’s technique or desire, but you are no longer welcome, Mr. Bolles.
Show the Defense Some Love
After a rocky start in the first four games, the defense had another strong performance in week seven. The score may read 30-6, but it could have been much, much worse. Time after time, the Broncos defense had to defend a short field in week seven. Still, the defense only gave up two touchdowns, which deserves a shoutout. Again, the score reads 30-6, but it’s much more than that.
Even when Mahomes was in the game, he only had 76 passing yards on 11 attempts. Also, the Broncos help the Chiefs to only 80 yards rushing. Furthermore, outside of his long touchdown, Tyreek Hill did not have a huge game. For that matter, Travis Kelce did not have a huge game, either. Yes, the Broncos defense deserves credit for what they were able to accomplish. So, not all hope is lost there.
Justin Simmons is Legit
The standout performance of the night came from Justin Simmons. Simmons was everywhere in week seven. He finished with eight tackles, and two passes defended. Indeed, in his third season, Justin is making significant progress. So much so that I think it’s safe to say that the Broncos can solely focus on linebackers in the draft on the defensive side of the ball. Simmons (and Kareem Jackson) fill a void in the secondary that was missing after the Super Bowl season.
For the Last Time
It’s time for Elway to go. Enough is enough. The team has no confidence. You can see it in their eyes. Gone is the fun-loving Von Miller. The smile that usually graces the face of Emmanuel Sanders? Gone. Chris “Strahp” Harris looks like he wants to be elsewhere. The City of Denver will always love John Elway for the three Super Bowls, but his time is over. If Elway truly cares for the team, he will step down and let someone else reign.
