5 Things We Learned About the NFL (Week 5):
5) Russell Wilson could be the most underrated NFL player of all-time:
The Seattle Seahawks defeated the LA Rams, Thursday Night, 30-29. The Seahawks are now 9-1 in their last 10 Thursday Night matchups. Wilson leads the NFL with 29 fourth quarter comebacks. The Former NC State and Wisconsin quarterback, was 17-23 for 268 yards and 4 touchdown passes. He also ran for 32 yards. Wilson continues to win and put up numbers without an elite running back, tight end or wide receiver. His offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, is one of the most conservative play callers in all of football. When the competition gets better, Russell gets better. He is now 19-12-1 in games decided by a FG or less.
4) Packers take control of the NFC:
The Green Bay Packers went into Dallas and defeated the Cowboys 34-24. The Packers did this without Aaron Rodgers throwing a touchdown pass, Davante Adams not playing because of an injury and their defense injured. Aaron Jones had 107 rushing yards and 75 receiving yards. He became the first running back in the history of the NFL to rush for 4 touchdowns against the Cowboys. Say it out loud… the Packers won in Dallas without Rodgers throwing a TD pass. The Former California Golden Bears QB is now 8-2 against the Cowboys.
3) 10 teams failed Miserably in the 2017 NFL Draft:
The Browns, Bears, 49ers, Jaguars, Titans, Jets, Chargers, Panthers, Bengals and Saints all passed on Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson. The former National Champion, threw 5 touchdowns on Sunday. The Texans demolished the Atlantas Falcons 53-32. Watson was 28-33 for 426 yards and 5 touchdowns. He also ran 4 times for 46 yards. On the season, he is completing 65.1% of his passes, has 14 total touchdowns and 1 interception. In just his 3rd year, he is becoming an elite quarterback. William Fuller had 53.7 fantasy points for Houston. It is the most fantasy points by a wide receiver since Terrell Owens in 2000. As long as Watson stays healthy, Houston is a favorite to win the division, for a 4th time in 5 years.
#2) Frank Reich puts on a coaching clinic:
The Indianapolis Colts beat the Chiefs, in Kansas City, 19-13 on Sunday night. The Colts kept the Chiefs offense and Patrick Mahomes off the field all night long. Indianapolis rushed for 180 yards and had possession for 37 minutes. The scouting report is out on KC. Double team Travis Kelce and let other players on the Chiefs roster beat you. The NFL is a “Copy Cat” league, other teams will follow the blueprint to beat the Chiefs. Their coaching staff and Mahomes will have to adjust.
1) Adam Gase is a joke:
The New York Jets are 0-4. The team brought in Adam Gase to add life to an offense that hasn’t been elite since Joe Namath was under center. Quarterback Sam Darnold has missed the last three game with mono, but this team and this coaching staff has shown zero creativity on offense. The Jets have worse offense numbers in the NFL.
They are 32nd in total yards…179 per game.
They are 32 in passing yards…113.5 per game.
They are 30th in rushing yards… 66 per game, with Le’Veon Bell.
They are 31st in points scored… 9.8 per game.
The Eagles had 10 sacks against the Jets on Sunday. It was the first time Philadelphia had that many sacks in a game since 2007.
Adam Gase should have never been hired and he can’t be fired quick enough. The Jets should target Lincoln Riley from the Oklahoma Sooners to be their next coach.
Bonus Coverage:
Teddy Bridgewater became the 2nd New Orleans Saints QB, since the merger, to throw for over 300 yards and 4 touchdowns. The Saints are now 16-2 in their last 18 home games.
The Bills are now 3-0 on the road. It is the first time the Bills begin the season 3-0, away from Buffalo, since 1993. Tennessee missed 3 FG’s in their 14-7 loss.
The Raiders won in London 24-21 over the Chicago Bears. Josh Jacobs became the first running back with 140 scrimmage yards and 2 TD’s vs Chicago since 2013. He has a good chance to win rookie of the year.
Christian McCaffrey had 237 total yards in Carolina’s 34-27 win over the Jaguars.
The Broncos defeated the LA chargers 20-13. Phillip Rivers is now 3-8 against Denver, at home, in his last 11 games.
The 49ers defeated the Browns 31-3 on Monday Night. SF is young, fast, aggressive and playing with confidence. They are the most underrated team in the NFL. They are 4-0 for the first time since 1990. Joey Bosa is a nightmare for opposing offensive lineman.
Baker Mayfield is the definition of all hype. His stat line against the 49ers. 8 for 22, for 100 yards and 2 interceptions.
