The 2025 Washington Commanders NFL season kicks off with a classic NFC East showdown as they host the New York Giants at Northwest Stadium. Coming off a 2024 campaign that saw them reach the NFC Championship Game, the Commanders are no longer underdogs but a team with a target on their backs. Meanwhile, the Giants, looking to rebound from a 3-14 season, bring a revamped roster led by veteran quarterback Russell Wilson. Let’s dive into the key players for Washington and how they can grab a victory.
Key Players for the Commanders
1. Jayden Daniels: The heartbeat of Washington’s offense, Daniels is coming off a historic rookie season, earning AP Offensive Rookie of the Year honors with a 69% completion rate and 891 rushing yards, the most ever by a rookie quarterback. His dual-threat ability is a nightmare for defenses, as evidenced by his 435 yards and two touchdowns against the Giants last season, with a 112.8 QB rating. Daniels’ mobility and precision will be critical in exploiting New York’s 27th-ranked run defense from 2024. Expect him to target deep throws and scramble for key first downs. He has the juice and is growing into the leadership role.
2. Terry McLaurin: Fresh off a contract extension, McLaurin is poised for another big year after setting a franchise record with 13 touchdown receptions in 2024. His chemistry with Daniels is undeniable, and his ability to stretch the field will test the Giants’ secondary, which ranked eighth against the pass last season but faces a tougher challenge with Washington’s upgraded receiving corps. McLaurin’s knack for big plays makes him a must-start in fantasy and a focal point of the passing game. How much rust does he have after the hold in?
3. Frankie Luvu: On defense, Luvu is a versatile playmaker who racked up 99 tackles, 12 for loss, and eight sacks in 2024. His ability to disrupt both the run and pass games will be crucial against a Giants offense that struggled last season (30th overall, 31st in scoring). Luvu’s speed and instincts can pressure Wilson, who showed inconsistency late in 2024, and contain rookie running back Tyrone Tracy.
4. Austin Ekeler: With Brian Robinson Jr. traded to San Francisco, Ekeler steps into the feature-back role. One of only two NFL players with 300-plus rushing and receiving yards in each of the past seven seasons, his versatility as a runner and pass-catcher adds dynamism to Washington’s attack. He’ll exploit gaps in New York’s run defense and serve as a reliable check-down option for number 5. Look for him to so why Robinson was able to be traded.
How Washington Wins the Game
For the home team to get the win a couple of things need to happen starting with protect Jayden Daniels. With the additions on the O line this Giants front four will be a good early test. Remember Daniels prefers to run when HE wants to, and not to save his life play after play. This is one of the better defensive lines in the NFL.
Get the pass game rolling and take advantage of what I see as a weak secondary. All the Commanders tight ends could have a shot to make plays and stretch the Giants linebackers. Look for OC Kliff Kingsbury to get the run game started and try to soften the New York pass rushers.
On defense I want to see the Pro Bowl version of Marshon Lattimore who will be healthy. Malik Nabers is a beast opportunity for the two to lock up will be there. Von Miller needs to make the most of his opportunities to be a factor. This team had the 30th ranked run defense so only were to go is up right?
Final Thoughts
Feed off the home crowd, make Russell Wilson make mistakes and come out healthy. This offense is too much for the Giants and Washington gets the win 31-20. #RaiseHail
