San Francisco – The Valkyries found a new surge of energy in the fourth quarter. However, it wasn’t enough to cut the 24-point lead the Aces generated in their 91-81 loss.
The Valkyries relied heavily on their three-point shooting in this matchup and closed out the half 9-of-23, down by two points. The offense from the Valkyries just wasn’t enough.
The Aces took over in the third and held the Valkyries to 13 points to their 29. 4x MVP A’ja Wilson and Jackie Young were an unstoppable duo with a combined 24 points in the third to advance the lead. Wilson closed out the game with 28 PTS, 15 REB and 4 BLKS. Five of Wilson’s rebounds were offensive, which helped the Aces with another possession.
“We practice it [rebounding], but when we’re actually going against A’ja Wilson, she’s really quick, she has this quick reflex” Nakase said. “Her having five offensive rebounds definitely not on the game plan.”
The Valkyries were visibly frustrated for their performance. They struggled to get to the basket, missed easy shots and made little mistakes that continued to add up. Nakase repeatedly said in the press conference that their defense needs to dictate who they are dictate their control over the game.
Gabby Williams had a team-high 20 PTS, 4 REB, 2 STL.
Nakase took full accountability for the loss and said her communication needs to improve for the next matchup. “When you miss shots obviously you get down, but you can’t down you have to keep fighting.”
Golden State face the Portland Fire for the first time on Tuesday evening. It will also be the first time Carla Leite returns to Ballhalla since she was selected by the Fire.
