The WNBA’s Commissioner’s Cup is underway, and teams are fighting for a spot in the championship game. Last year, the Indiana Fever beat the Minnesota Lynx in the big game, and this year, a new champion may be crowned.
This year’s tournament is special, as two new teams are involved. The Toronto Tempo and the Portland Fire are active, and they are establishing their presence in their respective conferences. When it comes to the Commissioner’s Cup, the Tempo are 2-1 in their games. They started their journey with a game against the New York Liberty. New York hosted Toronto, and Breanna Stewart and her teammates beat the young expansion team.
A few days later, the Tempo took on the Chicago Sky. Toronto improved to 1-1 with a victory, and Brittney Sykes was the star. She finished that game with 25 points, and she was one of four players who scored in double figures. The new squad had a Commissioner’s Cup win under its belt, and on Wednesday, the Tempo made a statement with an overtime win.
Sykes Strikes Again
In a game that came down to the wire, Skyes had a huge performance. She tied her career high, as she had 38 points. She reached that number for the first time earlier in the season, as Toronto took on the Los Angeles Sparks. Unfortunately, the Sparks secured a 10-point win.
Sykes and her teammates were on a mission, and the overtime win over the Connecticut Sun helped them improve to 2-1. They are in a good space when it comes to Commissioner’s Cup standings, but Eastern Conference rivals like the Liberty and the Atlanta Dream are ahead of them. Regardless, this new team is not backing down, and there are still tournament games to be played.
Toronto has three more Commissioner’s Cup games, and the next one is against the Washington Mystics. Then, matchups with the Dream and the Fever will follow.
So far, the Tempo are having a solid season, and their Commissioner’s Cup performances are adding to that status. While they may not win this year’s event, they are proving themselves and showing their opponents that they have what it takes to win. So, keep an eye out for this rising team.
