The Los Angeles Rams return to SoFi this Sunday as they take on the Indianapolis Colts. The Rams are looking to bounce back from a disappointing 33-26 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Colts are looking to make 4 straight wins following their 41-20 victory over the Tennessee Titans.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford has been solid in leading the Rams’ offense. Through three games, Stafford has passed for 739 yards with 5 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Stafford has made a concerted effort not to force the ball into tight coverage, taking what the defense will give him. Though he has completed passes to 10 different receivers, Puka Nacua and Davante Adams have been his primary targets so far this season. Nacua leads the team with 29 receptions for 333 yards. Adams has 13 receptions for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns. Nacua and Adams give Stafford a vaunted 1-2 receiver duo. Though 8 other receivers have gotten at least 1 pass, Stafford will look to get more receivers involved in the passing game.
Pass protection will be key for the Rams’ offense as Stafford continues to deal with a lower back injury. On the season, the Rams have allowed 5 quarterback sacks. The Colts have 7 quarterback sacks through their first 3 games and will look to bring pressure to Stafford and challenge the Rams’ pass protection. Starting offensive guard Steve Avila is dealing with an ankle injury that held him out of the game against the Eagles. Avila has been limited in practice this week, and his status is uncertain. If Avila is not able to play, look for Beaux Limmer or Justin Dedich to start at guard for the Rams.
Head coach Sean McVay has been known as a pass-first coach in his tenure with the Rams. Through the first 3 games, McVay has used a more balanced offensive attack. RB Kyren Williams has gotten off to a slower start than expected this season. Williams has averaged 75 rushing yards through the first 3 games. In the game against Philadelphia, Williams began to find his rhythm as he rushed for 94 yards on 20 carries, part of the 160 rushing yards the Rams totaled. RB Blake Corum contributed 53 yards on 8 carries. The Colts’ defense has given up an average of 94 rushing yards per game through 3 games. Look for Coach McVay to continue to use a balanced offensive attack against the Colts.
Quarterback Daniel Jones has had a career resurgence in his first year as the Colts’ starter. On the season, Jones has passed for 816 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 72% of his passes. Daniels has a firm grasp on the Colts’ offense and has done a good job taking care of the football, having not thrown an interception this season. Jones is taking what the defensive coverage is giving him and has not forced the situation. The Colts’ pass protection has done a good job protecting Jones, as they have allowed 2 sacks. Jones will also tuck the ball and run, as he rushed for 55 yards on the season. The Rams’ edge rushers, led by Jared Verse, Byron Young, and rookie Josiah Stewart, will look to keep outside containment and prevent Jones from escaping to the outside.
WR Michael Pittman is the top receiver in the Colts’ offense with 16 receptions. Alec Pierce and Josh Downs will be key factors in the Colts’ passing game. The Colts will look to attack a Rams pass coverage that fell apart in the 2nd half of their game against the Eagles. With starting CB Ahkello Witherspoon out with a broken clavicle, look for Emmanuel Forbes JR., Cobie Durant, and Darious Williams to see time at the cornerback position. As the Eagles did in the 2nd half, look for the Colts to test Witherspoon’s replacement. Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula will look to devise a scheme to limit the productivity of the Colts’ receivers. The Rams will also need to be aware of Colts TE Tyler Warren in the passing game. Warren is 2nd on the team with 14 receptions and will be a factor in the Colts’ offensive attack.
Though a lot of talk has been on the play of Daniel Jones, the Colts’ offense starts with RB Jonathan Taylor. On the season, Taylor has rushed for 338 yards with 3 touchdowns. The Rams’ defensive line will need to get off their block and close off the inside running lanes with the inside linebackers, led by Omar Speights and Nate Landman, providing inside support and maintaining pursuit angles to take away Taylor’s ability to cut back on his runs. The Rams’ edge defenders will look to take away the outside running ability of Taylor and force him back to the inside.
The Rams are looking to bounce back and erase the sting of blowing a 19-point 2nd-half lead against the Eagles and get back on the winning track. The Colts are looking to continue their hot start to the 2025 season and make it 4 wins in a row. This will be a close game. In the end, look for the Rams to back into the win column and snap the Colts’ winning streak.
