Nestled at the foot of Pikes Peak in Colorado lies the charming town of Manitou Springs, known for its natural beauty, vibrant art scene, famous arcade, and perhaps most notoriously, the annual Emma Crawford Festival. This unique celebration, held each October, commemorates the life and legend of Emma Crawford, a young woman whose story has become entwined with the town’s folklore.

Emma Crawford was a 19th-century resident of Manitou Springs who gained notoriety for her unique request upon her death: to be buried atop Red Mountain, overlooking the town. Unfortunately, the passage of time and the region’s shifting terrain caused her coffin to slide down the mountainside during a rainy season, creating a ghostly spectacle witnessed by locals below.

The festival began in the spirit of embracing local lore and fostering community spirit. Manitou Springs introduced the Emma Crawford Festival in the early 1990s. Initially a small-scale affair, the festival has grown into a beloved event that attracts visitors from across Colorado and  beyond.

Undoubtedly the centerpiece of the festival, the Coffin Races draw the most attention and enthusiasm. Teams from various backgrounds construct elaborately themed coffins and race them through Manitou Springs’ streets. Participants don costumes ranging from historical figures to whimsical characters, adding to the festive atmosphere.

A more solemn yet integral part of the festival is Emma’s Wake, where participants pay their respects to the festival’s namesake. This event serves as a reminder of the festival’s roots in local history and folklore.

The festival afterward features a lively parade with floats, marching bands, and local performers. Street vendors offer a variety of treats and souvenirs, while musicians and entertainers keep the crowds engaged throughout the day. Attendees are encouraged to dress in costume, with prizes awarded for the most creative and elaborate outfits.

Beyond its entertainment value, the Emma Crawford Festival plays a crucial role in Manitou Springs’ cultural fabric. It brings together residents and visitors alike, fostering a sense of pride in local heritage. The festival also supports local businesses, artists, and nonprofits, contributing to the town’s economy and community spirit.

The Emma Crawford Festival stands is a testament to Manitou Springs’ ability to blend history, creativity, and community spirit into a truly unique celebration. Whether you come for the coffin races, the cultural experience, or simply to enjoy the picturesque setting at the foot of Pikes Peak, this festival offers something special for everyone. As Manitou Springs continues to evolve, the Emma Crawford Festival remains a cherished tradition that honors the past while embracing the future.
