Taking A Look At The Patriots Offensive Coaching Staff

VIA Pats Pulpit

The Patriots have a new offensive coaching staff, one that actually has coaches that have coached that side of the ball before. Funny how that works. No Matt Patricia or Joe Judge nonsense. Robert Kraft told Bill Belichick to hire Bill O’Brien and he did to be the OC and quarterback’s coach. The one and only guy that can get Mac Jones back on the right track. Mac needed and wanted real coaching and said last season he wanted to be coached harder. O’Brien will bring that day in and day out.

Patriots OC Bill O’Brien

VIA SI

O’Brien knows the Patriots offense of years past. Scrap what they did last year and start over with what Mac is familiar with. Go back to the offense when Josh McDaniels was the OC in 2021 and maybe incorporate plays Mac ran at Alabama now that O’Brien is here. Great move by Kraft to get O’Brien back to run and be in charge of the offense. Keep Bill Belichick away from the offense.

Patriots Bring In Adrian Klemm

VIA University Of Oregon

The offensive line coach is former Oregon O-Line coach Adiran Klemm. Klemm was the first overall draft pick of Bill Belichick back in 2000. Klemm lasted a season with the Pittsburgh Steelers as their O-Line coach.  Team NBS Writer and Podcaster Melo Williams who covers the Steelers gave his take on Adrian Klemm. You can follow Melo on Twitter @_melowilliams also the host of The Press Conference Podcast. See his work on Team NBS Media – Sports, Entertainment, Lifestyle, Podcast Company.

“Coach Adrian has a great ability to recognize talent. He’s an ABC guy. Huge on the fundamentals and techniques on both run and pass blocking, He’s going to teach the techniques of both run and pass blocking.
He’s demanding and expects his players to be tough-minded. He learned from the great Mike Munchak so his concepts and schemes are legit.”

Patriots Tight Ends Coach Will Lawing

VIA Pats Pulpit
The tight ends coach is no longer Nick Caley it’s now Will Lawing a long-time Bill O’Brien assistant when he was the head coach of the Houston Texans. Lawing was also tight ends coach the last two seasons at Alabama. He can maybe work with Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith to get them more involved with the offense. Henry has been good but Smith has been a non-factor the last two seasons.

Patriots Wide Receiver Coach Troy Brown

The wide receivers coach is Troy Brown which with a real OC can work his position group better than he could last year. Kendrick Bourne shouldn’t be in the doghouse and get more playing time. I think the Patriots bring back Jakobi Meyers in free agency that was Mac’s favorite target last season. I think they get Mac another receiver that can get over the middle and make plays after the catch besides Meyers and Bourne. Agholor may be the odd man out and probably not on the roster in 2023.
The Patriots are off to a better start than they were last off-season. With Jerod Mayo probably assistant head coach will probably be more focused on the defense with Steve and Brian Belichick. Also, Bill Belichick can have more focus on the defense as well. Mac should be a lot more relaxed with his coaching setup for 2023. He’s probably thinking he has a real shot at least to prove he can be a legit quarterback in the league. I think he can with O’Brien and the right pieces around him. Setting him up to fail last year set him back and now he has to rebound. I think he does, and the Patriots have a better record in 2023 because of the changes to the coaching staff on offense.
