The Connecticut Sun brought the home crowd to its feet Wednesday night, snapping a six-game losing streak with a hard-fought 71–62 win over the Chicago Sky at Mohegan Sun Arena. After weeks of frustration, the victory injected fresh energy into the team and reminded fans of the fight still left in this group.
Rookie Leïla Lacan had a big game. She led the team in scoring with 17 points, marking her first time achieving this feat this season. She also had four boards, five assists, and two steals. Tina Charles made the game even more compelling by scoring 15 points. The Sun finally ended their losing streak and raised their record to 6–26.
In the second quarter, issues arose when Bria Hartley (Sun), Rebecca Allen, and Ariel Atkins (both Sky) got into a fight that led to three ejections. Both teams were shaken up by the conflict, but Connecticut was able to recover. Head coach Rachid Meziane praised how the team used the situation to their advantage instead of giving up when things got tough.
Chicago played again without sophomore star Angel Reese, who had to sit out with an ongoing back issue. Kamilla Cardoso stepped up and had a great game, scoring 24 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. Elizabeth Williams also had a great game, snagging 15 rebounds. Even though the Sky tried hard, their offense was off. They shot well below average and couldn’t beat Connecticut’s tough defense.
Defense wins games, as shown by the fact that Connecticut held Chicago to just nine points in the fourth quarter, ending any dreams of a comeback. The Sun went to 6–26 and stayed at the bottom of the standings with the win. The Sky, on the other hand, fell to 8–24. Still, this win could help boost their spirits and bring the team closer together as the season winds down.
Next week, the Sun will try to keep this progress going when they host the Indiana Fever. The Sky, on the other hand, will be back at home to play the New York Liberty. The team still doesn’t have a chance to make the playoffs, but this win showed what they can do when they push through adversity.
