As the leaves start to fall and the holiday season is almost here for most of us the last thing on our minds is fitness. But, the spotlight on fitness doesn’t stop a lot of us are already planning 2024 health and fitness goals. Everyone has to start somewhere and our guest this month had a journey a lot of us can relate to. We head to British Columbia with a growing personal training business focusing on body and mind we introduce you to Des’re Clark!
Joe Cardoso: How did you get started being interested in fitness?
Des’re Clark: I grew up active in sports and played soccer all through elementary and high school. I started getting into the gym back when I was in grade 10- although I had no clue what I was doing! I really got invested in my fitness journey during my first year of university. I was struggling with anxiety, coming out of a toxic relationship, and ultimately just felt I had lost myself since I had stopped playing soccer.
JC: We know most people quit within the first few weeks of their journey, how did you get over the hump?
DC: I truly believe that people need to have an “oh shit” kind of realization- something deep that’s going to drive them. For me, I had hit rock bottom. I had gained a bunch of weight, ate like shit, stopped doing any kind of physical activity, and spent the majority of my free time using partying as a way to avoid how I was feeling. I had been working out on and off two years prior, but it took me getting to this point to have something to really drive me. I wrote out on a piece of paper my goals, why it was going to be so important for me to reach that point, and what I was going to need to do in order to get there. Whenever I felt like giving up, I would read it and remind myself why I was doing what I was doing. Your pain gives you a purpose if you have no real reason behind why you should be doing something, why would you do it?
JC: Was this something you did alone or did you have someone to push you along the way?
DC: This was a journey I had taken on completely on my own!
JC: When did it hit you that training is something you wanted to do?
DC: When I was able to take my life and do a complete 180. The gym truly saved me. It taught me discipline, self-love, and self-respect. As my own journey progressed, I would have friends and family members reach out and ask me for advice and I loved helping. When I first started my fitness Instagram account, I made free programs to give to my followers. All I wanted was to be able to show women that they aren’t stuck and they are capable of changing their lives, in the same way I changed my own
JC: Do you think social media has helped or hurt the industry?
DC: I think social media has been both a blessing and a curse for the fitness industry. On one hand, it gives people all over the world access to a platform to help educate and for others to learn from. It gave me that platform! On the other hand, this is also a problem- ANYONE can have a platform to share whatever opinion or “advice” they want, whether it’s in someone’s best interest or not. There are a lot of amazing and educated coaches and creators out there, but there are also a lot of not-so-amazing and uneducated coaches and creators out there.
JC: What does a typical week look like for you?
DC: Monday starts with a team meeting to review how the previous week went and to review the game plan for the week ahead. We also run onboarding calls with our new clients on Mondays
Tuesday: we have SOS calls with our clients in our Elite Coaching program
Wednesday: we do a DM review with our coaches
Thursday: we run SOS calls with our team coaching ladies
Fridays are usually a batch content day. I’ll film recipes, talking videos, get B-roll, etc for the week to come.
JC: With a few months left in 2023 one goal you have to hit is_____?
DC: Our goal is to build our client community to 300 ladies!
JC: What do you hope your clients walk away with?
DC: My main priority with our clients is to have them walking away with a strong foundation of their own knowledge surrounding fitness and nutrition, but also with the tools to be able to maintain the new habits and body they have built. We never want our clients to have to rely on having a coach for the rest of their lives. We make sure our Body Rebuild babes walk away from our program confident in knowing what steps to take in order to maintain their new normal and to continue to evolve their journey
JC: When not training and coaching we can find Des’re Clark doing?
DC: Good question LOL. I love what I do so much, I spend the majority of my time doing that! Any time I’m not working or working out, I usually spend time with friends
JC: Who is Desre Clark?
DC: Des’re is the ultimate mentor and coach for women who are ready to break free. Those who want to break free from old stories that have kept them stuck, and step into the version of themselves. The person they’ve always dreamed of physically, and mentally.
What a dope human being! I want to thank Desre for the time and for sharing her journey so far, make sure you follow along with her on her social media networks:
You never know where the spotlight will shine next could it be you? Until next time stay safe and healthy.
