Patriots Earn First Win At Home In 2021

By: Steve Atkinson

The Patriots got their first win of the season Sunday at home to improve to 3-4 on the season. They are in second place in the AFC East. The New York Jets are probably one of the worst teams in the league and this game says more about how the Jets are terrible. The Patriots and Mac Jones walked all over the Jets defense today. Jones threw for over 300 yards for the first time in his career. The Patriots needed this win to gain confidence going into next week’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers. That game isn’t going to be easy and the Patriots still have flaws on defense and offensive line.

The defense on this team is still bad. The Jets had some opportunities to move the ball downfield but because of awful quarterback play, the Patriots caught some breaks on the defensive side of the ball. The loss of Jonathan Jones and not having Stephon Gilmore is a huge loss. Jalen Mills really isn’t that good and most of the secondary is bad in general.

Mac Jones Wins The Day For The Patriots

The biggest takeaway is Mac Jones who really has watched a lot of Brady film since he’s been drafted. He made some great throws sometimes under pressure and as always played with great poise and confidence. He didn’t throw any interceptions and Josh McDaniels let him throw the ball more and even went for it on fourth down. The Patriots did run up the score on the  Jets but the Patriots needed a boost of energy from a win and they got that today.

Can The Patriots Keep The Win Streak Going?

The question is can the Patriots keep this going with better competition? The still remains to be seen. They should’ve beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cowboys last week. Both were close games that came down to the wire. They barely beat the Houston Texans in Houston and lost to a bad Miami Dolphins team in Week 1. They also lost to the New Orleans Saints so we really don’t know much about this Patriots team after beating the Jets twice and Texans. They’ve had more “moral victories” this season than actual victories.

The Patriots have a tough schedule ahead starting with the Chargers next Sunday. If the defense plays like they have been they will lose. Again, the Jets are a terrible football team, and the defense still stunk today. They didn’t score more than 14 points because they don’t have a decent quarterback. Even before Zach Wilson got hurt the Jets were out to lunch on offense. The Patriots scored 14 points in the first 10 minutes of the game. It was over before it even started.

Jones was better in this win over the Jets than he was in Week 2. He has improved each week despite the losses in the other games. The future is bright with Jones and the Patriots as they could be successful for years to come. But, first, they have to find a way to win close games again and get back to beating good teams
