The North Carolina Tar Heels are in trouble. At the rate they’re going, they will miss the NCAA Tournament this season and there is no one to blame but themselves. Following their defeat at the hands of Wake Forest Tuesday night, the Tar Heels dropped their regular season record to 15-9. Yes, the same team that was just a few shots away from winning the championship last year, are not only on the bubble but are about to be swallowed by the bubble.
What has been the issue this season? For starters, the ACC is tough. The Conference houses 3 teams in the AP Top 25 with another 4 receiving votes. Despite their success last season, the Heels will need to rely on the ACC Tournament to make a strong case. It looks as if, they may not even get that shot this year unless lighting strikes again.
Last season, the Tar Heels finished their ACC schedule at 15-5. This season, they sit at 7-6 on the year. While fans will still hold out hope, what should have fans worried is that the Heels are about to get to the meat of their ACC schedule.
Will The Tar Heels Make The NCAA Tournament
Their remaining schedule has a combined record of 109-57. The Tar Heels need to right their ship and right it quickly before this all goes downhill. While teams like Notre Dame and Florida State have struggled this season, the Tar Heels haven’t fared much better. But that’s not to say that the talent is not there. The Heels still have one of the best players in the county in Armando Bacot, but they can’t seem to play to the level that’s needed to win on a consistent basis.
Can Hubert Davis channel the same energy the team used to go on that torrid ruin last season or will he watch his team just continue to fall deeper into the abyss? Out of their remaining schedule, the Heels will face just 2 teams with a losing record. With 7 games left in the regular season, there is a chance, the Tar Heels could go 2-5 which would place them at 17-14 on the season and that screams NIT not Field of 64.
For such a storied school and tradition, the Heels missing the Field of 64 after advancing and almost winning the National Championship last season, will be more than a gut punch. This cannot happen. The team is too talented to fall this far. And yet, here they are in danger of doing just that.
