We have all heard the phrase said time and time again in the NFL, “Defense Wins Championships.”

There have been some legendary defenses over the years:

  • The 1970’s Pittsburgh Steelers, Steel Curtain.
  • The 1985 Chicago Bears.
  • The 1986 New York Giants.
  • The 2000 Baltimore Ravens.
  • The Seattle Seahawks, Legion of Boom (2011-18).
  • The 2015 Denver Broncos, No Fly Zone.

Over the past decade, football has implemented dozens of rule changes to favor the offense. The term, “Defense Wins Championships” can no longer be applied. In today’s NFL and College Football, it is elite offenses and quarterbacks that are winning titles.

Over the past 8 years, The College football National Championship average score for the winning team: 39 points.

Over the past 9 years, The Super Bowl winning team average score: 27.7 points.

Below is a list of the top 10 scoring offenses in the NFL this season. Only 1, did not make the playoffs, the Los Angeles Chargers:

  • Dallas Cowboys
  • Tampa Bay Bucs
  • Buffalo Bills
  • Kansas City Chiefs
  • Los Angeles Chargers
  • New England Patriots
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Los Angeles Rams
  • Green Bay Packers
  • Arizona Cardinals

The Bills were the NO.1 rated defense in the NFL. They gave up 42 points against the Chiefs in the AFC Divisional round playoffs. The Saints, Panthers, Browns, Bears, and Broncos were all top 10 in defense this season, none of them made the playoffs.

Because of all the rule changes, it is getting harder to stop and elite quarterback in under 2 minutes. The Bills gave up a game tying drive with 13 seconds left and lost in overtime because their defense could not get off the field.

Over the next 5 years, do not be surprised if a team averages 40 points per game for a season.

Offenses are trending upward, defenses are trending downward.
