The New York Yankees were “quiet” on the MLB’s Trade Deadline Day. Brian Cashman and company decided to do business prior to Tuesday’s 4:00 nonwaiver trade deadline.
Cashman decided to bolster his roster with a trade with the Baltimore Orioles about a week before the deadline. Last Tuesday night the Yankees sent minor leaguers Dillon Tate, Josh Rogers, and Cody Carrol to Baltimore and in return received Oriole closer Zach Britton.
Britton was acquired to deepen an already strong Yankee bullpen. The Yankees already had good arms to throw out from the 7-9 innings going from David Robertson, Dellin Betances, to Aroldis Chapman. Pair Britton and Chad Green and the Yankees have the ability to pull a starter at the first signs of trouble.
Grabbing Rotation Help
Cashman was also able to grab a starter for the stretch run. J.A. Happ has been linked to the Yankees for what feels like months. Last Thursday that link became concrete as Happ was traded from the Blue Jays to the Yankees. The Yankees sent Brandon Drury and Billy McKinney to Toronto.
Happ made his Yankees debut Sunday against the Royals. Happ pitched well as he went 6 innings only allowing three hits and one run. Yankee fans and Happ would love to sign up for that for the next two months.
On Monday Cashman kept dealing. Adam Warren was traded to the Seattle Mariners in exchange of $1.25 million in international bonus pool money. To fill in the void left in the bullpen, the Yankees traded for Lance Lynn of the Minnesota Twins.
Tyler Austin and Luis Rijo were sent to the Twins in exchange for Lynn. Lynn has been versatile in his career, pitching both as a starter and out of the bullpen. Lynn will most likely find himself coming out of the bullpen to begin his Yankee career. Since Lynn has been a starter this season, his arm is stretched out and he would seamlessly be able to slide into the rotation if the Yankees need it.
The Yankees enter Tuesday night’s game six games behind the Red Sox for the AL East lead. They’ll have two games against the Orioles and will travel to Fenway Park for a crucial four-game series against Boston.
