The New York Yankees have been one of the most surprising teams in Major League Baseball this season. They seemingly have lost their entire team to injury, and yet as we enter Memorial Day Weekend, New York sits in first place of the AL East.
Due to the abundance of injuries, the Yankees have needed to have players step up. Luckily whoever has been penciled into the lineup has been up to the challenge. Ask Yankee fans what players have stepped up the most, and the two most prevalent answers should be Domingo German and Gio Urshela.
German was forced into the rotation after Luis Severino’s injury and has taken the reigns as the team’s ace. German has filled in and flourished. In ten games, German has a 9-1 record and a 2.60 ERA. German’s nine wins lead the Majors and he has only walked 16 batters while striking out 57.
Urshela’s opportunity came when Miguel Andujar was injured diving back into third base. Urshela has also thrived in his everyday role with the Yankees. Urshela plays a great defensive third base and has been a consistent hitter all season in the Yankees lineup.
He also ended the New York Yankees’ most recent trip in Baltimore coming up with a huge hit. With the game tied 1-1 in the sixth, Urshela came up with the bases loaded and delivered a two-run go-ahead single. The Yankees would go on to sweep the Orioles in the four-game set.
Looking Ahead
The Yankees head to Kansas City to take on the Royals over the weekend. The Yankees took three of four from the Royals back in April. Unfortunately, though the Yankees lost Aaron Judge to an oblique injury in that series. The Bombers will look to keep the bats rolling in Kansas City, and look to add to their AL East lead.
