Spring Training has come and gone which means the new Major League Baseball season is set to get underway! The New York Yankees enter the season as heavy AL East favorites. After falling in the ALDS to the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees will have their eyes set to a deeper October run.
Along with being the AL East Favorite, they are also one of the favorites to represent the American League in the World Series. It feels like far too long since the Bombers’ last World Series appearance in 2009. On paper, they have a team to break that dry spell. Of course their biggest issue the past few seasons has been staying healthy.
Yankees Relatively Healthy
The Yankees are only going to be missing three key players heading into Opening Day, Zack Britton, Justin Wilson, and Luke Voit. Britton and Wilson were penciled in to be two of their better lefties out of the bullpen. Voit is coming off a 2020 season in which he was the Major League home run king. Voit was the MLB leader with 22 long balls.
The Yankees have had plenty of arms in camp to try a bolster the bullpen and will use Jay Bruce as their starting first basemen to begin the season.
The Yankees also added two starting pitchers to help their rotation, Corey Kluber and Jameson Taillon. Both are coming off an injury-filled 2020, but have the potential to turn the Yankees rotation into a top-tier rotation. By the time the postseason rolls around, I wouldn’t be surprised to see their playoff rotation as Gerrit Cole, Taillon, Luis Severino, and Kluber. Add in Jordan Montgomery, Deivi Garcia, and Domingo German and the rotation should complement their daunting lineup.
2021 should be an exciting one in the Bronx. The likes of DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gleyber Torres should have the Yankees breezing to an AL East title. Most importantly to the Yankees and their fans, 2021 has the potential to go well into the nights of October.
