The New York Mets have had a tremendous week of baseball. They swept their division rivals, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals and split a 4-game series against the 1st place, Los Angeles Dodgers. The Mets have a record of, 37-19, and they are 8.5 games ahead of the Atlanta Braves. This is the biggest lead the Mets have ever had to start the month of June.
Pete Alonso is having and MVP-like season. He is 1st in the National League in home runs with 16 and 1st in RBI, with 54. The offense does not stop with Alonso, Francisco Lindo is 3rd in the National League with 45 RBI. Luis Guillorme, Nick Plummer, and Jeff McNeil are all batting over .300. Mark Canha and Starling Marte have 54 RBI combined.
The Mets Offensive Rankings:
- 3rd in runs per game, (5.1).
- 1st in hits per game, (9.0).
- 1st in batting average, (.264).
- 1st in OBP (.335).
This is an offense that is creating runs, not by the home run, but by simply putting the ball in play and making productive outs. Buck Showalter has this team thriving and playing “small-ball.”
The Mets pitching staff has done wonders without their 3 top starters. They are 5th in runs per game and 7th in earned runs allowed. The good news is, Jacob deGrom and Tylor MeGill have started to throw and neither have had setbacks. Max Scherzer continues to rehab from his abdominal injury. If these three can be health and on the mound in August, New York will have a legitimate chance to win the National League Pennant.
