The New York Mets are entering the week of August 29th with a record of 82-47. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers have a better record. New York has a 3-game lead in the National League East but their schedule has been brutal. They just finished up a stretch in which they played 27 games in 26 days.

The Mets took 3 out of 4 against the Colorado Rockies this past weekend and will start a 3- game series with the 1st place Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, August 30th. LA comes into New York with an 88-38 record, 50 games above .500. Taijuan Walker will pitch the opener and Jacob deGrom will pitch the 2nd game of the series. The game 3 starters have not been announced.
Sportscaster Dan Patrick used to say, “You can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him.” The same can be said about this Dodgers team. They are + 285 in run differential this season. The next best team is the New York Yankees at + 194. Los Angeles is not only beating teams, they are embarrassing them. LA has 6 players on their roster with 15 or more home runs and 7 players with over 50 RBIs. Mookie Betts has 31 home runs and Freddie Freeman and Trae Turner have 166 RBI’s combined
Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso lead the Mets in hits. They both have 131 on the season. Lindor appears to have hit the wall. He was 0-15 going into Sunday’s game. Alonso may not hit 40 Home runs this season, but his stats are MVP-like. He has 31 home runs and 105 RBIs. Jeff McNeil has been the teams most valuable commodity. He is batting .321 which is 3rd in the National League.
Prediction:
For the Mets’ final 34 games, their opponents have a .446 winning percentage, which is the easiest strength of schedule in the majors. I expect New York to take 2 out of 3 against LA. In September they play Washington, @Pittsburgh, @Florida, Chicago, Pittsburgh, @Milwaukee @Oakland, at home vs Florida before closing out the year in Atlanta. This team should be dominate their opponents over the next 30 days Hopefully they will have a big enough cushion against the Braves where they can rest their starters the last weekend of the season before the playoffs begin.
