The Toronto Tempo are navigating the season, and so far, it has been an interesting journey. They are 8-8 so far, and in their last game, they beat the Connecticut Sun by four.
Toronto was on the road for the last two games, and the squad went 1-1 in that period. The Indiana Fever beat the Tempo 113-91 in the first game, but Toronto bounced back with the win over Connecticut.
While the team played well overall, one performance stood out. Marina Mabrey had 37 points in that game, and she knocked down nine 3-pointers.
Mabrey’s Journey Begins
Mabrey has been one of Toronto’s key players, and she is no stranger to the league. She started her WNBA journey back in 2019, as she was a second-round pick in that year’s draft. She was selected by the Los Angeles Sparks, and while she played limited minutes, she got her first taste of the WNBA.
After her time with the Sparks, she was traded to the Dallas Wings. Her role began to change as she went from a reserve to a starter. As a result, her stats improved, and each year, her points per game average increased.
Mabrey played three seasons with the Wings before she headed to the Chicago Sky. In her first season in Chicago, she averaged a career-high 15.0 points, and she had her career high. She scored 36 points against the Fever, and the Sky lost that game by two points. Of course, she passed that number in the win over the Sun, but during the 2023 season, she showed what she was capable of.
Then, after her stint in Chicago, she was traded to Connecticut. That was her final stop before she came to Toronto. The Tempo are an expansion team, and they drafted Mabrey during an expansion draft. Now, she is having a strong season and her new team is a potential playoff team.
The Tempo’s veterans are helping the team succeed, and having an NCAA champion like Mabrey makes it even better.
