In the movie Jerry Maguire, the agent, played by Tom Cruise says, “I am out here for you. You don’t know what it’s like to be ME out here for YOU. It is an up-at-dawn, pride-swallowing siege that I will never fully tell you about”
That perfectly describes what it means to be a Mets fan. New York has not won a World Series since 1986. Over the past 15 years, we have seen the Phillies, Nationals, and Braves win a title. The Good news is there is hope, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
Projected lineup
- RF Brandon Nimmo
- CF Starling Marte
- SS Francisco Lindor
- 1B Pete Alonso
- DH Robinson Cano
- LF Mark Canha
- 3B Eduardo Escobar
- 2B Jeff McNeil
- C James McCaan
This is an offense that should be able to put up runs consistently. Canó did not play last season as he served his second career performance-enhancing drug suspension. If he can give the Mets 20 HR’s and 70 RBI’s this lineup could be very dangerous. Buck Showalter will have this defense greatly improved and they will play “small-ball” to create runs. Lindor had disappointing numbers last season. I expect him to have a monster year in his 2nd season at City Field. Pete Alonso continues to be one of the best power hitters in the game.[pickup_prop id=”21258″]
Projected rotation
- RHP Jacob deGrom
- RHP Max Scherzer
- RHP Chris Bassitt
- RHP Taijuan Walker
- RHP Carlos Carrasco
If healthy, this is a pitching staff that can compete with anyone in the National League. DeGrom and Scherzer are perennial all-stars. Bassitt was 12-4 last year in Oakland and Walker is one of the best No.4 starters in the major leagues. Edwin Diaz is a serviceable closer but the Mets need a lefty reliever. Their top 5 starters are all right-handed.
Prediction:
Even after losing Freddie Freeman to the Dodgers, the Atlanta Braves are still the class of the NL East. I expect New York to be the 2nd best team in the division and make the playoffs. Showalter should get some Manager of the Year votes.
Mets finish the season 92-70, and no one will want to face that pitching staff in the post-season.
