Grey’s Anatomy is still chugging along after almost 2 decades on air. Even with charterers coming and going, the show has still managed to stay afloat. Ellen Pompeo, who plays Merideth Grey is set to air her last episode for a while but fans are still buzzing around the departure and possible return of Alex Karev.
This week, Justin Chambers, posted a picture on Instagram that had fans in an uproar about a possible return. While the TV execs over at ABC said that he was not coming back, it could be all smoke and mirrors to throw fans off. But what if he does decide to make an appearance the same way Jesse Williams and Sarah Drew have done with their characters Jackson Avery and April Kepner?

Fans were not thrilled when it was announced that Karev would not be returning, but the writers tried their best to give him a proper send-off. Instead of killing him off as they did with other notable characters, they decided to reunite him with his ex-wife Izzie Stevens. But there were a few catches to that storyline. One was that Izzie had managed to freeze her eggs and had given birth to Karev’s kids without his knowing. The other drawback was that Karev nor Izzie made an appearance on screen in their final episode. So yes, fans felt they were robbed of a proper ending.
Will Alex Karev And Izzie Make A Return To Grey’s Anatomy?
An Alex Karev return on Grey’s Anatomy would be huge for the show even if he doesn’t get to share any screen time with Meredith. The only way his return would work is if he returned with Izzie. Since her departure in Season 6, fans have waited patiently for her return. By giving her and Alex some closure, it felt like less of a blow as Alex left his then-wife Jo to be with Izzie.
While we may never get to see Christina Yang again on Grey’s Anatomy, there is still a chance that we get Katherine Heigl to reprise her role. Bringing Karev back for whatever reason is huge. With Meredith off to Boston, that could be just the move to make. Neither of them has to make it back to Grey Sloan Memorial, but for Karev and Izzie’s kids to meet and play with Meredith and Derek’s kids, would be huge for their closure.
Fans of Grey’s Anatomy need this to happen. That last episode with Karev leaving Jo to be with Izzie just felt wrong and right at the same time. As loyal fans, we get the impact it would have on the show. However, we were still robbed of seeing them one last time. If Alex Karev does come back for a cameo, it must be done with Izzie Stevens by his side.
