How many TV shows can say they had a 10-year run? Grey’s Anatomy can raise their hand and then tack on another 10 just for good measure. With news that Station 19 will end after its 7th season, it forced me to think of the ultra success of Grey’s Anatomy as a whole.
There have been medical dramas to grace the small screen from ER to House and Chicago Med, but what Grey’s has done, has completely changed the game entirely.
Shonda Rhimes and ABC knew they had something special but did they know that had 33 years of special on their hands in 2005 when the first episode of Grey Anotmany aired?
Yes, you read that correctly, I said 33 years. You can count the 20 years of Grey’s, then tack on the 6 for their first spinoff, Private Practice, and then add in another 7 with their current spinoff, Station 19.
One show has provided so much for one network that by the time Grey’s does decide to call it an end, how will ABC make up for that void?
How Many More Seasons of Grey’s Anatomy
Watching Grey’s is like rewatching the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe all over again starting with Iron Man. Grey’s was well written. It provided fans with storylines that other shows wanted to touch on but just couldn’t. Then, as the years progressed, the characters became bigger than the show.
A medical drama that touched on so much emotion, that it was just hard to watch at times without reaching for tissue.
But with each great season, it was as if the main characters were leaving left and right. But with each departure, new characters, storylines, and shows were created. Addison Montgomery, after departing Grey’s Anatomy, took her talents to Los Angeles where she teamed up with her bestie and gave Grey’s fans another universe to call their own. And Addison just wasn’t confined to Private Practice. She still made her way back to Grey Sloan Memorial.
But ABC wasn’t done there. The Emergency Response Team was just a face in the crowd on Grey’s Anatomy but ABC saw something there. They saw an opportunity to add to their universe. When Ben Warren began to question his place at Grey Sloan Memorial, he wanted a change. Along came Station 19 and the Seattle firefighters.
While not as emotional as Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19 found its lane. Unlike Private Practice, Station 19 was more involved with the daily operations at Grey Sloan Memorial.
While fans will hate to see Station 19 go, the timing is right. If we are indeed coming up on the final season of Grey’s Anatomy, leave the stage just for them to shine. 20 years in, no other show needs to come after them or even share their swan song spotlight.
Let Merideth, Bailey, Richard, and the rest of the characters have the Island to themselves, hell, they earned that and more.
