On Tuesday night, the Miami Heat made 40 out of 40 free throws against the Oklahoma City Thunder. This helped them seal their victory, 112-11. 40 makes out of 40 shots is the very definition of consistency. Miami broke the 1982 Utah Jazz record of making 39 out of 39 attempts. This was no shock to fans who follow the Heat. They are number 1 in the league in FT percentage (82.6%)
In life, those who are consistent, usually succeed. The same is true for teams in sports. When we think of great organizations we think of consistency. In the NBA you have the Golden State Warriors who have been consistent for the last decade. The Steelers under Mike Tomlin have never had a losing season in 16 years. In Baseball, the New York Yankees may not always win a world series, but they are always in the playoffs. The Dodgers have made the postseason for 10 straight years.
I grew up playing and coaching basketball. It is my favorite sport to watch, broadcast, and write about, but, I can no longer tolerate what has been going on with load management and organizations resting players. The NBA has now become the picture of inconsistency. One night Kawhi Leonard will score 33 points, grab 8 rebounds, and 5 assists, the next two games he sits out. I am tired of seeing Luka Doncic score 50 points, dish out 15 assists, and grabbed 12 rebounds one game and the following evening he is resting.
Below is an example of what happens in the NBA on a daily basis. Look at all the players sitting out.
This is not a sustainable business model. Companies can’t thrive long-term without their best workers/players performing consistently. The NBA has a real problem here. Fans are getting tired of working all day, coming home to watch a game, and three or four-star players are resting. Imagine being a father of 2 on a fixed income. You pick a game to go to when the schedule is announced. You buy the tickets and take your kids to the game, only to see Leonard and Paul George and Anthony Davis resting.
If the NBA wants to get its ratings back up they need to stop with back-to-back games and cut the season to 68 games. This league has always been fan friendly, not playing your stars, only drives paying customers away. They need to do this before they lose a generation of supporters.
