I predicted a 30-17 final, I wasn’t predicting 5 straight possessions resulting in touchdowns for the Cowboys. I’ll certainly take missing that part, besides it was nice not seeing any white knuckle moments from Brett Maher. The offensive explosion led by a team record day from Dak Prescott (405 passing yards), was even better than I had hoped for.
In my preview, I wrote about the weapons at Prescott’s disposal. Well, he used them all. Blake Jarwin, Touchdown. The returning Jason Witten, Touchdown. Newcomer Randall Cobb, Touchdown. Amari Cooper, Touchdown. For good measure, the new running back money leader Ezekiel Elliott found the end zone on the ground. The most impressive contributor though was Michael Gallup, no touchdowns but he kept drives going all day finishing with 158 receiving yards. The biggest factor in the win though has to be the play of the offensive line. With All-Pro center Travis Frederick back the line was back to its dominant ways. They kept Prescott protected all game long.
The Cowboys defense wasn’t spectacular, yet they did manage to create two turnovers, something they must keep doing weekly. A few missed assignments and the tackling was not up to par, Vander Esche and Smith, were everywhere as per usual, causing all kinds of chaos for the Giants to deal with. They can certainly play better though as a unit.
All in all, this was exactly what the doctor ordered. The Cowboys sent a clear message to the rest of the league. Think they’re predictable? Think again. This offense will be much more than just handing it off to Zeke, and passing it to him in order to move downfield.
