In Ray Bradbury’s science fiction classic Fahrenheit 451, firefighters have an audacious goal: to burn books, rather than extinguish fires. While point GOAT Courtney Vandersloot and her Sky certainly do not believe in such censorship, they delivered a similarly dramatic thrill with their shocking sweep of the Portland Fire in a doubleheader last week. With Vandersloot (finally!) back in the lineup, Chicago must quickly pivot to a vital afternoon opportunity.
Spirits Exhumed
Bradbury’s genius lies in exposing society’s ills in a nonpartisan manner. The Sky also have plenty of villains to point a finger at, granted their challenges! Be it further officiating follies, seen through coach Tyler Marsh’s livid eyes after a colossal disappointment in Dallas, or just the attrition of a six-game slide, Chicago had every reason to give up.
Vanersloot would not let this outcome occur! In Wednesday’s first triumph over Portland, Slooty fiercely congratulated Elizabeth Williams after Williams’ posterizing block helped end the third quarter. One could almost see disappointment’s spirits fly out of Wintrust Arena in the cathartic 101-78 rout.
Second verse? Even better! Slooty returned to the court and, despite playing limited minutes, will provide a needed emotional boost. She briefly left Chicago for New York in 2023 and 2024 in an apparently irreversible blow to Chicago’s basketball pride.
Strike that; reverse it.
Or maybe not.
United Through Pain
Chicago’s 2025 debut at the United Center offered immense promise. The June 7th competition against Indiana offered a brilliant contrast to the many years (relatively) impoverished ownership forced the Sky to play in questionable arenas.
The joy of that summer afternoon changed all too quickly when Vandersloot fell screaming to the court. She had suffered a cruel ACL tear and would not play again that season. She had another easy explanation to end her basketball career. Who could have blamed her? It seemed that Angel Reese was Chicago’s future star.
However, Sky general manager Jeff Pagliocca decided that Atlanta’s draft capital offer was superior to Reese’s Chicago presence. Vandersloot’s leadership was perhaps even more vital with a retooled roster.
And like any good novel, her journey returns full circle to the source of an original frustration. After Kamilla Cardoso’s triumphant 13 of 13 shooting night in Friday’s 124-94 bamboozling of Portland, Las Vegas enters the house that Jordan built.
The Aces are, true, a daunting opponent. One can only imagine the clarity currently blossoming in Vandersloot’s brave mind. Will her courage lead Chicago to an improbable triumph?
Remember what action Fahrenheit’s protagonist, Guy Montag, took when facing the symbolic and physical evil of an iron fire dog? Acknowledge the threat. Take appropriate action. And win the world despite an entire crumbling culture crashing down around him. In Sunday’s contest, the Sky have a similar opportunity on a smaller scale. A point guard, through her free will, refuses to submit to the pseudo-terror of failure. And to the 14 WNBA franchises already dismissive of Chicago’s passion?
Vandersloot puts out their prideful fires while igniting her city once more.
