Colts Versus Steelers Week 9 Preview

By Bill Carroll

Date: Sunday, November 2, 2025
Location: Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis
Last Meeting: Colts 27, Steelers 24 (September 29, 2024, Indianapolis)
Significance: The Colts have won two straight over Pittsburgh, a rare reversal of historical fortune. Like Wellington’s disciplined stand at Mont-Saint-Jean, Indianapolis now braces to defend its home turf against a proud but inconsistent Steelers force led by a commander past his prime.

Prelude to Battle: Napoleon Returns, Rodgers Reloads

After his exile to Elba, Napoleon’s dramatic return in 1815, the ‘Hundred Days’, ignited one last desperate campaign to reclaim glory. So too returns Aaron Rodgers, waging a final war against time and attrition. His Steelers enter Week 9 at 4–4, their once-iron defense eroding beneath miscommunication and missed tackles. Rodgers, though brilliant in bursts, remains a general with limited ammunition: 1,489 passing yards (22nd), 16 touchdowns (tied 2nd), 5 interceptions, and a QBR of 52.0.

Across the field stands Daniel Jones, the unlikely Wellington. With 2,062 passing yards (3rd), 13 touchdowns (tied 11th), only 3 interceptions, and a QBR of 79.3, Jones commands with precision, balance, and a calm tactical mind. His offensive battery, led by Jonathan Taylor’s ground assault, has found rhythm and resilience, much like the Anglo-Allied lines holding steady under French cannon fire.

The Order of Battle

Forces Involved:
• Colts (7–1): Shane Steichen, disciplined, analytical, blending aerial and ground assaults.
• Steelers (4–4): Aaron Rodgers, bold but brittle; reliant on bursts of brilliance and the chaos of T.J. Watt.
• Terrain: Lucas Oil’s controlled climate, an advantage for precision offenses, a disadvantage for attritional defenses.
• Weather: Indoor conditions neutralize outside factors, placing emphasis on coordination, timing, and stamina.

Tactical Overview: Wellington’s Patience vs. Napoleon’s Impulse

The Colts’ scheme mirrors Wellington’s defensive positioning at Mont-Saint-Jean: layered, reactive, and opportunistic. Steichen’s unit thrives on controlling tempo, using Jonathan Taylor’s downhill runs to soften defenses before unleashing Jones’ precision strikes. The Steelers, by contrast, emulate Napoleon’s all-or-nothing charges: spectacular when timed right, disastrous when coordination falters.

Pittsburgh’s Defensive Line: The Faltering Guard

The Steelers’ defense, once the most feared in the league, now mirrors the exhausted Imperial Guard at Waterloo. Their ranks: 19th in points allowed, 28th in yards surrendered, 25th in success rate, and 31st in missed tackles. They remain dangerous through T.J. Watt, their field marshal of chaos, but his relentless assaults often come without reinforcement. Without cohesion, even Watt’s brilliance risks becoming Ney’s doomed cavalry charge, all impact, no follow-through.

Colts Offensive Command: Combined Arms in Motion

Daniel Jones orchestrates a balanced offense that fuses precision passing and ground dominance. Jonathan Taylor functions as the cavalry breaking lines, forcing defensive shifts, and opening the field for play-action volleys. Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie tight end Tyler Warren form the infantry’s advancing ranks, sustaining momentum with route discipline and physicality. This structure recalls Wellington’s calculated counter-attacks, measured, disciplined, and devastating when timed.

? Tactical Diagram: The Battlefield at Lucas Oil

  • Daniel Jones is positioned like Wellington at the ridge, directing the timing of artillery strikes (passing game).
    • Jonathan Taylor the mounted cavalry, running through the A-gaps to expose weak points in Pittsburgh’s interior defense.
    • Aaron Rodgers the commanding from behind the line, launching deep volleys to DK Metcalf (the steel-clad cuirassier of the Steelers’ offense).
    • T.J. Watt the Imperial Guard, attacking relentlessly off the edge, attempting to shatter Jones’ left flank.
    • Colts Offensive Line the are the earthworks, forming the defensive ridge, absorbing the impact and buying Jones time for precision fire.

Keys to Victory: Timing, Terrain, and Temperament

  1. Contain Watt: Neutralize his rush with motion, chip blocks, and misdirection to force him to hesitate before charging.
    2. Sustain Drives: Taylor’s interior success dictates the rhythm; if he gains 100+, Steichen controls the game.
    3. Rodgers vs. Coverage:** The Colts must disguise zones and force Rodgers into late reads his 5 INTs stem from either broken timing or overconfidence.
    4. Red Zone Discipline: Jones’ efficiency must mirror Wellington’s patience; field goals alone, won’t beat Rodgers’ occasional lightning strikes.

Battle Forecast: The Modern Waterloo

As the cannons thunder in Lucas Oil, two legacies hang in the balance. Rodgers, like Napoleon, seeks one more triumph to prove his legend untarnished. Jones, steady and stoic, represents the new order — efficient, adaptive, and unflinching. The Colts’ discipline and versatility should withstand Pittsburgh’s erratic power. Expect a fourth-quarter push by Rodgers, but like the Imperial Guard at Waterloo, it may come too late.

Prediction: Colts 30, Steelers 24, Indianapolis holds the ridge, takes “Waterloo” and advances its campaign for January supremacy.
