The New York Liberty suffered another blowout loss, falling to the Dallas Wings 91-76 on Sunday.
Dallas’ superstar backcourt stole the show, dropping 24 points apiece while drawing considerable support from the visiting crowd.
While the overall box score doesn’t look great, the Liberty at least got Sabrina Ionescu back and 20 points from Satou Sabally.
New York’s point of attack and perimeter defense is severely compromised with Leonie Fiebich and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton out of the lineup.
Chris DeMarco understands that, calling for his team to stay connected and play with more urgency.
“We just need to have a sense of urgency,” DeMarco said. “We started the game strong on the defensive end, and then it’s about the adversity. When they hit a couple in a row, are we gonna fight? Are we gonna have the correct adjustments? Or are we gonna play together? And I know we will. I know we will.
“And tonight, they hit some shots, we gotta be better in transition, we gotta be better offensively with the right shot so that they’re not leaking out, but we’ll be right next game, we got another one tomorrow.”
Liberty Falls Apart in Second Half
New York’s defense had a ton of trouble getting stops in the second half, especially from behind the arc. Fudd drilled five of her six 3-pointers in the third quarter alone.
“If anything, I think it’s a great learning experience for us to not let defenses really dictate what we’re trying to do on the offensive end, and when a team is taking something away, obviously, they’re gonna make adjustments at halftime. I think we have to make better adjustments as we’re feeling it as players in the game. Figuring out what they’re taking away and how we can do better at making that [adjustment] in real time.”
DeMarco is just six games into his head coaching role with the Liberty. The results won’t be instantaneous like it’s been in years past, but this team is too talented not to eventually find its niche.
