Matt Campbell’s Fast Start: 4 Takeaways From Penn State’s 3-0 Start

Three games into the Matt Campbell era, Penn State looks like a program that traded uncertainty for answers  fast. The Nittany Lions are 3-0, ranked No. 14 nationally, and enter Big Ten play having outscored Marshall, Temple and Buffalo by a combined 127-22, without allowing a touchdown through three quarters of any game. Here are my four observations on what’s driving that start ahead of the Sept. 26 opener against Wisconsin.

1. Campbell has built an identity fast physicality first.

After James Franklin’s midseason firing last year, Penn State needed a program reset, and Campbell — hired away from Iowa State — has delivered one without the typical new-coach stumbles. Campbell has pointed to his team’s “urgency,” “physicality” and attention to “details” as the traits driving the 3-0 start, and it shows: the Lions have not allowed a fourth-quarter point in any of their three games this season. It’s early, and the schedule has been soft, but the tone Campbell wanted has clearly taken hold in the locker room.

2. Rocco Becht is exactly the transfer portal answer Penn State needed.

The Iowa State transfer, who left Ames with 26 career wins — the most of any active FBS starting quarterback at the time, has been the steadiest piece of the offense. Becht went 21-of-27 for 268 yards and three touchdowns against Temple, then followed with 11-of-19 for 212 yards and two more scores against Buffalo, connecting on chunk plays like a 70-yard touchdown to Koby Howard on a post route. He’s not perfect — he went just 11-for-19 against Buffalo and fumbled a snap, joking afterward, “So I’m not perfect” — but his accuracy and downfield chemistry with a deep receiver room have given Campbell’s offense a proven veteran at the controls from Week 1.

3. The run game found its footing just in time.

Penn State’s ground attack was the one blemish through two games the Nittany Lions entered Week 3 as the Big Ten’s only team without a 20-yard run. That changed emphatically against Buffalo, where Penn State rushed for over 300 yards, led by Quinton Martin’s exactly 100 yards on 10 carries, James Peoples’ 59 yards and two scores, and a 59-yard Cam Wallace burst. Offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser rotated the backs smoothly and even dialed up a reverse to Koby Howard for a touchdown, signaling a run scheme that’s starting to diversify beyond one look.

4. Third-down and red-zone execution is the clear area to watch entering Big Ten play.

For all the offensive explosion, the details Campbell keeps circling back to are still rough around the edges. Penn State was just 2-for-10 on third down against Buffalo, and the average third-down distance sat at 7.9 yards that’s a sign the offense is still leaning on explosive plays rather than manufacturing easy conversions. Campbell himself flagged defensive penalties and third-down inefficiency as lingering issues even in a blowout win. Those are the kinds of cracks that get exposed against Big Ten competition, starting with Wisconsin and continuing through a stretch that includes USC, Michigan and Washington. Penn State has cruised through a manageable nonconference slate; how these two phases hold up against real competition will define whether 3-0 is a springboard or a mirage.
