Drafting in sports is not an exact science and lord knows in baseball the misses come at you fast. Not too many people paid attention when the Yankees drafted a 6’7 280-pound beast named Aaron Judge. This is a season of rebuilding and seeing which one of their many prospects will pan out. So far, the main headline of the season has been Judge and his moon-shot home runs. We are early in the season but so far, he is the star of the team. One of the concerns was his defense and if he could turn into a quality outfielder. 21 players who were drafted ahead of Judge have yet to see the majors.
Any Yankee fan knows that any talk of World Series run with this team is insane. But we never say no to a wild card run and giving the baby bombers a chance to earn their stripes. Funny catch phrases on tee shirts about Judge are already all over the internet and with the pitching staff holding up. Standing at 7-3 in the last 10 games you can see the promise of the squad. The question will be in the dog days of summer can Judge and company hold up? Once major league pitchers get the book on you can he adjust? One of his strengths so far is his care has been his ability to make adjustments. He already has cut down his strikeouts and who hits the ball harder? His swing has changed since he was in single A so odds are in his favor.
With Gary Sanchez and Didi Gregorius still out the lineup should improve. I am still very uneasy with the rotation and wonder if this production from Michael Pineda and Luis Severino is a sign of things to come. At the start of the season, my gut told me no way we contend for a postseason spot and we would be lucky to hit .500. But after just a few weeks call me a homer but I am all in and see 84 wins from this team. But the main theme of the season so far has been the Judge and all his power. How many will he crush over the green monster this week?
