Golf will always humble its biggest stars, and this week it was Scottie Scheffler’s turn. At the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota, the World No. 1 ran into a problem he hasn’t faced much this season. That problem was someone playing better than him. That someone was 21-year-old Jackson Koivun, playing in just his third start as a professional. He blazed a tournament-record 25-under 259 to win by three shots over Scheffler for his first career PGA Tour title. This was a weekend Koivun won’t forget anytime soon, nor should he.
This wasn’t a fluke. Koivun built a three-shot lead entering Sunday and never let Scheffler close the gap. The World No. 1 even charged in typical fashion. For Scheffler, it was his fifth runner-up finish of the season. It’s proof that dominance doesn’t mean invincibility, even though some of us think that. For Koivun, it was a statement. A 21-year-old outdueling the best player alive, in only his third pro start, isn’t a moment you shrug off. It’s the kind of result that gets a young player into Presidents Cup conversations. In addition, it gives the Tour a new name to build around heading into the playoff stretch. Golf is always looking for its “next big thing.” Koivun just wrote the opening chapter himself, and it was a page turner!
There’s no time to sit with it, though. The Tour heads straight to Detroit Golf Club for the Rocket Classic (July 30–Aug. 2), and this one comes with extra weight. Rocket Companies has confirmed it won’t renew its sponsorship after this year, making this the final edition of a PGA tournament that’s called Motor City home since 2019.
It’s going out with a BANG. Jordan Spieth, Xander Schauffele, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Cantlay, J.J. Spaun, and defending champion Aldrich Potgieter headline a 145-player field stacked with 21 of the top 50 players in the world. Give me all the drama that is sure to come with this tournament.
The favorites: Cameron Young, playing the best golf of his career and widely tabbed as the man to beat; Xander Schauffele, making his Rocket Classic debut; and Wyndham Clark, who has surged back into form in 2026.
Beyond the star power, this week carries real stakes. It’s the second-to-last event of the FedEx Cup Regular Season, meaning bubble players are scrapping for a top 70 finish to punch their playoff ticket. Most of the sport’s biggest names are skipping next week’s Wyndham Championship to rest ahead of the postseason, which makes Detroit an unexpectedly loaded final tune-up. And with the tournament’s future beyond this year uncertain, there’s a legacy angle too one last shot for a player to add their name to a champions’ list that already includes Bryson DeChambeau, Rickie Fowler, and Tony Finau.
