The Tennessee Volunteers are heading to Starkville, MS, for the first time since 2012, when the Bulldogs defeated the Volunteers 41-31. That said, Tennessee has won 8 of the last 10 meetings, holding an overall record of 30-16-1 against Mississippi State. Last year, Tennessee dominated Mississippi State 33-14. However, this is not the same Mississippi State team as in 2024. The Bulldogs are currently 4-0 this season, boasting a massive upset victory over then-No. 12 Arizona State. Under Jeff Lebby, this Bulldog team is on an upward trajectory. So, what does Tennessee need to do this weekend to secure a win against Mississippi State?

1.  Prevent big plays on defense. Mississippi State loves to throw the ball deep and is highly effective at it. Expect true freshman cornerback Ty Redmond to be tested again, as he was against UGA, where he gave up the game-tying touchdown. This will be a critical moment for Tim Banks’ defense, which has struggled all season to keep even lower-tier teams out of the end zone.

2.  Run the ball. Tennessee once again has a three-headed monster at the running back position. The Volunteers will need to rely on Star Thomas, DeSean Bishop, and Peyton Lewis to control the clock and maintain possession. Together, they have rushed for 692 yards, with 10 rushing touchdowns and 2 receiving touchdowns.

3.  Put pressure on Mississippi State QB Blake Shapen. Tennessee cannot allow him to stand comfortably in the pocket and throw deep. By forcing him to throw from different angles and platforms, the Volunteers can disrupt his rhythm and prevent him from breaking down the defense with time to survey the field.

It cannot be stressed enough that this game will hinge on Tennessee’s defense stopping big plays. With a point total set at 63.5, this game could turn into a shootout. Currently, few trust this defense to make the necessary stops, as it has failed to do so consistently all season. Tennessee cannot get J. McCoy and R. Gibson back soon enough.
