Season 7 of The Chi brought back a character we did not realize we needed. With the surprise return of Reg, The Chi set up a few different storylines that have made this season an interesting and yet sad one.
Reg was that guy for the first two seasons of The Chi. He was what Nuck was before he was supposedly killed by Douda. With Reg back in Chicago, he wasted no time letting everyone, including Nuck, know that he wants his crown back.
While he was plotting to reclaim the MOB, Reg had other plans in mind. He wanted his family whole again, which included Jake, Victor, and their mother. And this is where fans are a bit torn.
Most do not like how he’s treating Jake, but when was Reg ever that loving brother? He raised Jake to be tough. He took no chances with his younger brother. With Vic away and their mother dealing with her demons, it was Reg’s job to make sure Jake had the survival skills needed to roam the streets of Chicago. That’s not to say he didn’t love him; he just used tough love. Victor was the exact opposite of Reg when it came to Jake.
Now that he’s back, Jake has both, and that should have only benefited him in the long run. But look at it this way, Reg has added another level to the chain that we’ve been missing. As tough as that family is, they needed one another. Hell, looking at the Mother’s Day episode, you could also say that the mother is needed.
I can admit that some of the storylines on The Chi have gone a bit off course. Reg was really on some demon time antics well before shooting Emmett, but while he’s taking heat for that, he did not want to do it. And if we’re being honest here, he was defending himself. Reg is a known killer, and Emmett wasn’t thinking properly, but you can’t rush into a man’s home and start attacking him and think it’s all good because you got love in the streets.
Despite it all, two great scenes broke down the character of Reg. The one with Vic and Jake after Reg took his girl, when Vic explained how he failed Reg growing up. Then the second was with Rashaad outside of Alicia’s house. Reg is bad, but he’s one of those characters who had no choice.
He came back to be with his family and reclaim the MOB, but may have gone about things the wrong way, or the only way he knows. All he knows is getting things by force, and with so many people not in his corner, and now he’s the hunted, Reg is going down swinging with no care in the world.
The Chi gave is an unexpected return. We loved it at first, then grew to hate it. Reg has become the villain of Season 7 due to some bad writing. He could have been the savior of it all. He could have been the one to help bring some peace to the streets and help put an end to Nuck. The Chi already had their fair share of villains, Reg should of had a redemption story in his return.
