It’s good to be back and talk Hoyas basketball, the Hoyas are 7-1 so far on the young season and this week is a STRONG test in the form of a trip to face rival Syracuse Orangemen. This is always a great game and any REAL fan of the Big East and this school has a favorite memory or two. No game has been a breeze as each opponent has at some point tested the young team. One thing is for sure the freshmen class has proven it’s worth led by James Akinjo who is second on the team in scoring and shows no fear. Not sure we could have asked for more from Jessie Govan he’s been a straight beast and unquestioned leader. With 5 games left until the start of Big East play the rotations and style of play are coming together.

The Week That Was:
Georgetown Vs Loyola Marymount L 52-65
Georgetown Vs University Of South Florida W 76-73
Georgetown Vs Cambell University W 93-85
Georgetown Vs Richmond W 90-82
Georgetown Vs Liberty University W 88-78

Game Of The Week: Each of the games played so far has had highlights and showed us what the team could be when it is clicking but this week Syracuse is THE matchup so far this young season. It’s on the road and the Cuse are 6-2 and 5-0 at home, a tough place to play and where names are made so I’m excited for what this young team brings to the floor. With three double-digit scorers in Tyus Battle, Oshae Brissett, and Elijah Hughes defense is a key and keeping the turnovers down. Against the 2-3 zone, you attack it from the middle/mid range and make the long-range shots when you take them. The Hoyas are not a 3-point shooting team but getting some of them to fall will help extend the zone out and should open up the middle for Jessie and company. Would not want to forget that hitting the boards and limiting second-chance points will go a long way as to who wins.

Player Of The Week: James Akinjo he has been so, so impressive thus far 14ppg, 5 boards and 5 dimes a clip. Already down the stretch of close games he doesn’t shy away from the big moment and wants the ball in his hands. You have to feel like a big-time game like Saturday is what he lives for and he will be amped to have a positive impact. Honorable mention to Jessie Govan who is doing his thing.

Season Thoughts: With what we saw on paper this is where the team was expected to be if not for coming out flat against Loyola Marymount they would be undefeated. I want to see Trey Mourning continue his play and become that legit 3rd threat while some of the other players work it out thru the course of the year. Mac McClung has sprinkled in highlights and good plays he just like the others needs to bring it nightly. The storyline for most games this year has been falling asleep at the wheel on the defensive side and allowing teams to make a run until they wake up and tighten up. On Saturday this can’t be the case the Orange have too much talent. Looking forward to a great game. The team will be turned up for it and so will I. Now undefeated at home we need the students to come out and support this new era of Hoyas hoops. Joe Cardoso

Joe Cardoso here! I’m the epitome of a sports junkie. An alum of the College of Southern Maryland, I received a diploma from the Maryland Institute of Broadcasting (MIB). During my tenure at MIB, I was a news/sports major and had the opportunity to intern at Fox 45 sports and Ravens Radio. I also worked as an overnight board operator for Sports Talk 980 ESPN Radio. I’ve been a total sports fanatic pretty much from the womb. My first love is soccer followed by basketball and then football. My favorite athletes are Kevin Garnett and Marino Rivera and my sports teams are the Yankees, Commanders, Michigan, Wizards, and Chelsea. My passion for sports is never ending. My sister once commented that I would probably follow pig racing if it was a sport!
