Betting is huge business and for that reason, there is a lot that goes into setting the NFL odds. Numbers aren’t just plucked at random – oddsmakers have teams of people working on setting the odds for the upcoming fixtures. They will take into account the form of the teams among many other factors, and this is what is used to set the initial odds. If something is mispriced then it can actually cost the sportsbook companies a lot of money.

The NFL odds are subject to change, though. There are plenty of factors that can have an effect on NFL odds and betting patterns, and how people are placing their bets will help the bookmakers and oddsmakers to change their decisions. It might be the case that something happens in the lead–up to a fixture that changes the way people are staking their money, and this has a huge impact on the NFL odds in general.

In this guide, we’re looking at three of the top things to look at that can have a big influence on the price you get on a certain market.

Trades and draft picks

This is especially relevant at this time of the year. One of the biggest things that can impact the odds ahead of a coming season is how a team has performed in the draft and in making trades. For instance, you may want to look at the winners and losers of a draft pick before you decide to place any bets on them.

If there is a hotly-tipped youngster in the draft and a team manages to pick them up for the coming season, then there is every chance that they are going to improve their prospects. This will definitely change the NFL odds for a variety of markets. As well as changing the odds on them to win the championship or their regional division, it will impact the wins over/under market and more.

Trading is another crucial part of the game and a team that manages to make some impressive trades and to fill holes in their squad as a result might be in a better position. This is definitely going to make a difference to the odds.

These are some of the reasons why it is a good idea to wait until close to the season before you place your bets, as things can change with the draft and with the trades that may occur in this window.

Injuries

Nobody would ever wish this on their opponents or enemies, but injuries are part of the game and sometimes in the NFL the injuries can be very serious, keeping a player out for months or even over a year. There have also been examples of injuries ending careers.

Sometimes luck just isn’t with you, and it could be that your players end up getting a few injuries through pre-season. This will definitely impact the odds and the way in which people are betting, especially if they are your best players.

Let’s say Tom Brady gets an injury tomorrow – it is definitely going to impact the Buccaneers and their odds for the coming season since Tom Brady has always been so important to the teams he plays for. The individual player markets are affected a lot by injuries, of course, but so are team markets.

The weather

This is one that surprises some people but studies have shown that the weather has a big effect on the sport and how the games can pan out in the NFL. Though it doesn’t necessarily give one team an advantage, the weather can change things like how many points are scored.

For example, in a situation where it is really windy, it can be harder to score points and this is usually reflected in the total point lines, as explained in this post from Fox Sports.

Gamblers who are smart may take this into consideration before they place their bets, and wait for a reliable weather forecast, especially when betting on certain specific markets like whether or not a certain number of points will be scored.

Summary

Gambling on the NFL means paying close attention to the form and to everything else that could possibly play a part and affect how the game is going to play out. Gathering information before you place your bet can have an influence over whether you manage to call the game right and win your bets or not
