Dustin Johnson started the final round of the 2020 Masters with a four shot lead. As comforting as that might seem, it is not that much considering the hidden danger that may await you at Augusta National. Four strokes can be lost on one hole, and was in 2019.
Johnson avoided those disasters and played smart golf, while not being two aggressive even though at one point his lead slipped to two strokes.
The No. 1 player in the World Golf Rankings has a resume of a Hall of Famer, except for one thing, he only had one major. Despite winning every year he has been on tour, he only had one major. In fact he has had the 54 hole lead four times before in majors and never converted for a win, something those of us in the media reminded him of.
Today he erased that terrible monkey on his back and won his second major, and if it was not already secured, checks his ticket into the Golf Hall of Fame with 24 wins and two majors.
Johnson never gave up the lead. It got as close as two strokes but then Cameron Smith and Sungjae Im ran out of holes in an attempt to catch him.
DJ as everyone calls him, played the way you should play with the lead. Conservatively, laying up on the par 5, 13th hole. A hole normally he would reach in two.
His misses were in the right places and they were few, the mark of a champion golfer.
